Monday 3rd May 2010

Wigan Athletic    2-2   Hull City   13:30   DW Stadium
Hull City are officially relegated after an entertaining draw at Wigan Athletic.

Steven Gohouri's dramatic stoppage-time equaliser stole a point for Wigan and confirmed Hull's relegation from the Barclays Premier League.

The Tigers fell behind after half an hour when Victor Moses curled the ball in off the post, his first strike for the Latics since joining from Crystal Palace.

Hull looked to have turned the match around as youngsters Will Atkinson and Mark Cullen also opened their Barclays Premier League accounts, but Gohouri - another Wigan first-time scorer - struck with a late acrobatic effort to send the visitors down.

Blackburn Rovers    2-1      Arsenal   17:00   Ewood Park
Blackburn Rovers came from behind to beat Arsenal at Ewood Park.

Arsenal goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski's vulnerability in the air was exposed on a number of occasions before Rovers captain Chris Samba took advantage to head home a 69th-minute winner.

Robin van Persie's first goal since 31st October, having been sidelined for five months with an ankle injury, had put the Gunners ahead early in the first half only for David Dunn to equalise from close range just before the interval.

Wednesday 5th May 2010

Fulham    0-1   Stoke City   20:00   Craven Cottage
Stoke City earned an impressive away win at Fulham on Wednesday evening.

Matthew Etherington latched on to Ricardo Fuller's cross to smash his drive past Mark Schwarzer to inflict Fulham's fifth home defeat of the season and move Tony Pulis' side up to 10th in the table.

Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic had to react quickly to deny Clint Dempsey in the second half but Fulham otherwise lacked any killer instinct in what was largely a dull match.

Manchester City    0-1   Tottenham Hotspur   20:00   City of Mcr. Stadium
Tottenham Hotspur qualified for the Champions League after a 1-0 win at Manchester City.

Peter Crouch headed Tottenham into the Champions League with an 82nd-minute winner at Manchester City.

After surviving an early City onslaught, Tottenham slowly began to gain the upper hand at Eastlands.

And by the time Crouch was on hand to finish off a deflected Tom Huddlestone cross, Spurs were already worthy of a place at Europe's top table, consigning City to the Europa League.

  Sunday 9th May 2010

Arsenal    4-0   Fulham   16:00   Emirates Stadium
Arsenal secured third place in the Barclays Premier League after defeating Europa League finalists Fulham.

Mark Schwarzer failed to control a backpass from Chris Baird, which gifted the ball to Andrey Arshavin for the first.

Robin van Persie and a Chris Baird own goal made it 3-0 and Carlos Vela added a fourth late on.

Aston Villa     0-1   Blackburn Rovers   16:00   Villa Park
Blackburn Rovers extended their strong conclusion to the season through to the final day with victory at Aston Villa.

Richard Dunne headed Martin Olsson's cross into his own net six minutes from time to ensure Rovers finished 10th in the Barclays Premier League after a run of only one defeat in their last nine matches.

Bolton Wanderers    2-1          Birmingham City   16:00   Reebok Stadium
Bolton Wanderers ended the Barclays Premier League season with a win over Birmingham City.

Goals from Kevin Davies and Ivan Klasnic gave Bolton some home comfort against Birmingham at the Reebok Stadium.

Davies made the breakthrough in the 33rd minute when he headed home a free-kick from Paul Robinson.

Klasnic extended their lead, only for James McFadden to pull a goal back for Birmingham after Chris Benitez's penalty had been saved by Jussi Jaaskelainen.

Burnley    4-2   Tottenham Hotspur   16:00   Turf Moor
Burnley ended their stay in the Barclays Premier League with a victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Relegated Burnley went down fighting as they battled back from 2-0 down to defeat Tottenham at Turf Moor courtesy of a superb second-half display.

Spurs secured their spot in the Champions League with victory over Manchester City on Wednesday and they looked to be cruising when Gareth Bale and Luka Modric netted inside 32 minutes.

But Wade Elliott pulled one back before the break and incessant Burnley pressure in the second half paid off when first Jack Cork levelled and then Martin Paterson put the Clarets ahead. Steven Thompson put the icing on the cake with a late fourth.

Chelsea    8-0   Wigan Athletic   16:00   Stamford Bridge
Chelsea wrapped up the Barclays Premier League title in style with a convincing home win against Wigan Athletic.

Nicolas Anelka settled any nerves by putting the leaders in front after just six minutes and the match and title race were effectively settled on 32 minutes when Gary Caldwell was sent off as the Latics conceded a penalty.

With so much at stake, Frank Lampard insisted on taking it even though Didier Drogba was neck-and-neck with Wayne Rooney in the race for the Barclays Golden Boot. Lampard scored and Chelsea ran riot after the break.

Salomon Kalou netted on 52 minutes to chalk up a new Premier League record. It was Chelsea's 98th goal of the season, beating the 97 scored by Manchester United in 1999/2000.
Anelka grabbed his second two minutes later. Drogba did edge in front of Rooney when he scored Chelsea's fifth on 63 minutes to bring up the century of goals and when the Blues got a second penalty five minutes later, Lampard allowed Drogba to take and he scored off a post.

Drogba completed his hat-trick and secured the Barclays Golden Boot 10 minutes from time and Chelsea wrapped up the title in style with an eighth goal through Ashley Cole in the final minute.

Everton    1-0   Portsmouth   16:00   Goodison Park
Everton managed to end their season on a high thanks to a last-gasp strike against relegated Portsmouth.

Diniyar Bilyaletdinov fired a superb injury-time winner to send Portsmouth out of the Barclays Premier League as gallant losers.

The Russian substitute struck from distance in the fourth minute of time added on, just as Pompey looked to be bowing out of the top flight with a creditable draw.

Yet victory was no more than the Toffees deserved after creating a multitude of chances at Goodison Park

Hull City    0-0   Liverpool   16:00   Kingston Comms Stadium
Liverpool played out a goalless draw away to relegated Hull City.

Hull had the better chances with Mark Cullen missing two close-range efforts in the first half, while the closest Liverpool came was when Alberto Aquilani hit the crossbar just before the interval and Steven Gerrard a post moments before the final whistle.

It was the Reds' worst finish to a season since they came seventh in 1999.

Manchester United    4-0   Stoke City   16:00   Old Trafford
Manchester United did all they could but just failed to land the Barclays Premier League title.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men chalked up a convincing victory at home to Stoke City but it was not enough to prevent Chelsea taking the crown by a single point.

Darren Fletcher and Ryan Giggs scored before the break and a Danny Higginbotham own goal and Park Ji-sung's diving header doubled their advantage at the end.

Wayne Rooney failed to hit the target in the race for the Barclays Golden Boot and then sparked a World Cup scare when he limped off.
Rooney appeared to have suffered a recurrence of the groin problem he first sustained at Blackburn Rovers last month.

West Ham United    1-1   Manchester City   16:00   Boleyn Ground
The match between West Ham United and Manchester City ended all square.

Shaun Wright-Phillips and Adam Johnson pressed their World Cup claims by combining to earn City a point against West Ham United.

England assistant coaches Franco Baldini and Ray Clemence were in the stands to run their eye over six potential summer stars ahead of Tuesday's 30-man provisional squad announcement.

Wolverhampton Wanderers    2-1   Sunderland   16:00   Molineux
Wolverhampton Wanderers ended their campaign with victory over Sunderland.

Adlene Guedioura's late winner ensured Mick McCarthy's side finished a satisfying first season back in the Barclays Premier League on a high against nine-man Sunderland at Molineux.

Guedioura met a fine Ronald Zubar cross on the edge of the box and took two touches before unleashing a left-foot shot over Craig Gordon to secure a well-deserved win for the home side.
