THURSDAY'S meeting at Chesptow has passed a 7am inspection on the morning of racing.

In the past seven days the track has been hit with a total of 51mm of rainfall and with heavy rain forecast for Wednesday evening, officials decide to inspect at 7am.

Despite a further 6mm of rain through the night, the course survived the inspection and racing goes ahead.

 

Keith Ottersen, clerk of the course at Chepstow, said: "The rain started at 6pm and we had around 6mm until it stopped at 3am in the morning.

"That was on top of the 4mm that fell on Wednesday so as you can imagine conditions are heavy but raceable.

"We have had a very wet spell recently with 21mm of rain in the last 48-hours and 51mm over the past week."

Due to the heavy rain and testing conditions, the runners will bypass three fences and two hurdles.

Ottersen explains: "It's going to be very testing and due to safety issues we will not be using the last fence in the back straight, the second fence in the home straight and the second last fence in the home straight.

"On the hurdles course the first hurdle in the home straight and the second last hurdle in the home straight will also be omitted, leaving just two hurdles to be jumped in the home straight. "

The official going at the track is heavy with the risk of further rain later in the day.
