Melbourne weather update: Friday rain possible
23 March 2010

Showers are a likelihood on Friday as the first of three days begins for the second race weekend of the 2010 season. Of the fourteen Grands Prix hosted in Melbourne since 1996, however, not one has been held in wet conditions and that statistic looks set to remain the same this year.

As Formula 1 moves from the baking, sandy surroundings of the Bahraini desert to the more relaxing metropolis that is Melbourne, local forecasts state that Albert Park is set for a bright and sunny weekend although light showers could affect practice sessions 1 and 2 on Friday.

Temperatures for the weekend are expected to vary between highs of 20°C and 30°C (68-86°F) with fluctuating humidity percentages in the 40s and good visibility levels for the duration of the weekend.

Although no Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park has been affected by rain to date, showers did influence qualifying sessions at the venue for the 2002 and 2005 events.

The weather gods to smile on Melbourne?

This weekend's Australian Grand Prix could yet be an exciting affair, but not because of sudden rule changes or improved performances from the chasing pack.

It could be all down to the weather as rain is predicted in Melbourne.

Local hero Mark Webber tongue-in-cheekly suggested earlier last week that the only way to spice things up after a boring race in Bahrain is wet conditions.

"I reckon a bit of rain might help the entertainment value - yes, it could be useful!" he said.

Webber's prayers could be answered if early weather forecasts are anything to go by.

According to the latest predictions on the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, isolated showers are expected on Saturday while "patchy rain" will develop during the evening on Sunday. Rain is also expected during qualifying on Saturday.

Temperatures will hover in the high 20s, early 30s for most of the race weekend.

Should rain fall during Sunday's grand prix, then it will be the first time that the race has been affected by wet conditions since it moved to Melbourne in 1996 .

Round 2: Australia
24 March 2010

Formula 1 returns to Melbourne this weekend - for many, the true start to the season. The Albert Park street circuit has hosted all but two of the opening races to a World Championship since 1996 and more often than not provides an exciting mix of atmosphere and drama, both on and off the track.

Brundle takes off after hitting Coulthard at Turn 3 in 1996

Following what was regarded by many as a dull start to the season in Bahrain, Australia has an important role to play in 2010 in order for F1 to get its most anticipated season ever back on track, in terms of on-track excitement at least. Ferrari arrive with a 22-point lead in the Constructors' Championship, much less than it seems thanks to the new top ten scoring system.

Australia was welcomed to Formula 1 in 1985 but with another street circuit, in Adelaide - a traditional season-ending race which brought many a great moment including the explosion of Nigel Mansell's tyre in 1986 - costing him that year's championship - as well as F1's shortest ever race in 1991 and the infamous Hill-Schumacher collision three years later, which put the Englishman out and gave the Benetton driver his first of 7 titles.

Ralf Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello provide a dramatic start to the 2002 season

Melbourne took the reigns for 1996 as the 'Great place for a race - as dubbed by the locals' took the first spot on the F1 schedule. Damon Hill led a Williams 1-2 after team-mate Jacques Villeneuve - who had qualified on pole on his Formula 1 debut - narrowly lost out due to car problems, which left an oil-soaked Hill in the lead in what turned out to be his title season.

Surrounding a lake, Melbourne's Grand Prix circuit possesses a mix of high and medium-speed corners, with its first - named after 1980 Champion Alan Jones - often the scene of trouble. In fact, of the 14 races staged at the venue so far, six have featured significant moments at either this corner or the notorious Turn 3 - scene of Martin Brundle's enormous shunt for Jordan in 1996 as well as the Villeneuve-Ralf Schumacher collision which resulted in the tragic death of a marshal in 2001.

In 2009, Melbourne featured the emergence of Champions Brawn GP

In terms of weather conditions, anything can happen at Albert Park, often regardless of forecasts. However, if history if anything to go by we are unlikely to see a wet race as only practice and qualifying sessions have previously been affected by adverse conditions, with race day always remaining dry despite some being rather overcast.

Circuit changes for 2010:

- New combination kerb installed at Turn 9
- Kerbs and artificial grass extended at Turns 2 and 12

Kubica tops first practice in Melbourne
26 March 2010 / Results / Photos

Renault and Robert Kubica began their Australian Grand Prix weekend at the top of the timesheets by leading the first 90-minute practice session in Melbourne. With the crowd enjoying bright conditions, the Sauber team's viewing of proceedings was a downcast one as Kamui Kobayashi suffered a front wing failure at Turn 3.

Kovalainen follows Force India tester Paul di Resta, who was driving Adrian Sutil's car in Practice 1

Although scattered light showers had been forecast for Melbourne on Friday, there were bright and pleasant weather conditions for the teams to make the most of as the green pit exit light illuminated at Albert Park at 12:30 local time, with ambient temperature highs of 25°C (77°F) being beaten by the 32°C (90°F) track surface.

Although the first of three half hours in the session featured little incident, there were plenty of opportunities for racking up mileage as Lotus were the first team to leave the pits once again, courtesy of Jarno Trulli.

At the top of the listings, 2008 winner Lewis Hamilton set the early pace for McLaren before being joined in the top three by last year's Melbourne victor, team-mate Jenson Button, on a weekend which the Woking team predicts a general improvement on a lower downforce circuit.

The first of two red flag periods was deployed by FIA Race Director Charlie Whiting when Kamui Kobayashi struck the inside kerb of Turn 11, breaking his Sauber's front wing before running into the gravel at Turn 12 as a result; with debris lying on the race track, albeit off-line, officials were presented with no option but to delay proceedings by 6 minutes.

However, one with £10,000 front wing already broken, the Japanese driver brought out the reds for a second time less than quarter of an hour later as the replacement part failed on the run to Turn 3; with the wing dropping off its hangers and being forced underneath the Ferrari-powered car, Kobayashi was unable to turn or decelerate effectively and consequently skidded straight on into the gravel trap.

Hamilton, who finished the session seventh, pits the McLaren

A difficult start to the weekend for Sauber - the first team to copy McLaren's 'F-duct' air intake system - was compounded as Pedro de la Rosa's car ground to a halt just a corner down the road later in the session. There was also a spin for Vitaly Petrov's Renault, which clouted the new combination kerb on the inside of Turn 9. The Lotus of Heikki Kovalainen also lost control at the same point before being stranded on-circuit as the chequered flag came out.

As the red lights lit up for a final time in the session, Kubica headed the field on a best effort of 1:26.927, just under 2 tenths quicker than Nico Rosberg's Mercedes as World Champion Button made the top three. Felipe Massa was the leading Ferrari in fourth ahead of Vettel's Red Bull and championship leader Fernando Alonso. Local hero Mark Webber rounded the session off in 14th place, 1.7 seconds down on Kubica.

Practice One - Kubica puts Renault on top

Robert Kubica got Renault's Australian Grand Prix campaign off to a fine start with the fastest time in Friday morning's opening practice session. The Pole took his R30 round in 1m 26.927s, making him the only driver to breach the 1m 27s mark.

Behind him, Nico Rosberg won a tussle with the McLarens, lapping his Mercedes in 1m 27.126s to head Jenson Button on 1m 27.482s. Lewis Hamilton was fourth for a long time on 1m 27.793s but slipped to seventh as Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso improved for Ferrari while sandwiching Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel. Their respective times were: Massa 1m 27.511s; Vettel 1m 27.686s; Alonso 1m 27.747s.

There were two red flags, both occasioned by BMW Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi. In the first he lost his front wing after clobbering a plastic marker cone; in the second the replacement wing appeared to become detached. He ended up 18th on 1m 31.588s after walking home the second time.

Sebastien Buemi took eighth place for Toro Rosso on 1m 28.014s, just ahead of Russian rookie Vitoly Petrov in the second Renault with 1m 28.114s and Tonio Liuzzi in the lead Force India on 1m 28.192s.

The session marked Paul di Resta's first official run for Vijay Mallya's team, and the young Scot impressed by lapping close to Liuzzi with 1m 28.537s for 11th. This left him ahead of Michael Schumacher, who again appeared to struggle for Mercedes with 1m 28.550s.

Toro Rosso's Jaime Alguersuari was 13th on 1m 28.572s with local hero Mark Webber 14th for Red Bull on 1m 28.683s after one off-course moment in Turn Six.

It wasn't a great day for BMW Sauber as Pedro de la Rosa stopped out on the circuit with undisclosed mechanical problems after lapping in 1m 29.465s for 15th ahead of the Williams of Rubens Barrichello (1m 29.712s) and Nico Hulkenberg (1m 30.249s).

Behind Kobayashi, the three new teams had a grand little scrap which ended in Jarno Trulli's favour by a whisker from Lotus team mate Heikki Kovalainen, the duo lapping in 1m 31.652s and 1m 31.654s respectively. The Finn stopped out on the track on the last lap.

Lucas di Grassi chased them with 1m 32.831s for 21st in his Virgin ahead of Bruno Senna and Karun Chandhok. The HRT drivers both had minor offs, the Brazilian lapping in 1m 33.401s, the Indian in 1m 34.251s. Timo Glock brought up the rear with 1m 34.925s in the second Virgin.

Robert Kubica pulled off a surprise in Friday's Australian GP practice as the Renault racer put his R30 into the P1 slot ahead of Nico Rosberg.

With the sun baking down on the circuit, Kubica was the only driver to break into the 1:26s as he outpaced Rosberg by 0.199s.

Jenson Button and Felipe Massa were next in line while Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton all finished within a second of the Polish driver's P1 time.

However, it was Kamui Kobayashi who livened up the show as the Sauber driver brought out the red flags on two occasions.

Report: With practice starting at 12:30pm local time, the sun over Melbourne was out in full force with a track temperature of 39'C awaiting the drivers, who were quick to put in their installation laps and get their weekend underway.

Bruno Senna set the first time of the day, a 1:37.989 for the Hispania driver. He was soon overhauled by his team-mate Karun Chandhok, who went 0.011s quicker while Virgin's Lucas di Grassi took third place. Heikki Kovalainen went quickest of all, up by more than a second over his fellow new team drivers.

However, he was dropped when Lewis Hamilton put in his first lap time, a full five seconds up on Kovalainen's best, and the first indication of what the big boys will be doing around the Albert Park circuit. With more drivers venturing out Kamui Kobayashi went second ahead of Pedro de la Rosa, Force India test driver Paul di Resta, Vitaly Petrov and Nico Hulkenberg.

Problems for Kobayashi, who lost his front nose at Turn 12 after hitting a bollard before sliding across the gravel and heading back to the pits.

Michael Schumacher took second place, 2.054s behind Hamilton. However, while on a hot lap that included a fastest first sector time, the session was then red flagged, sending Schumacher into the pits and allowing the marshals time to clear up the damage caused by Kobayashi's incident.

Four minutes later the session was re-started with some talk that Schumacher could face a penalty of some sort for setting the fastest lap time of the session, a 1:28.629 under red flags conditions. His time was disallowed almost immediately while Red Bull boss Christian Horner joked that the German should face a ten-grid slot penalty for the next two races for his antics under red.

Nico Rosberg moved up to first place before he was dropped by Jenson Button. Robert Kubica took third ahead of Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber, Rubens Barrichello and Schumacher.

Button improved to a 1:27.482 while Kubica climbed to second, Schumacher sixth and Felipe Massa eighth.

The session then came to an halt as Kobayashi crashed his Sauber C29 when his front wing, who had just been put back on following his earlier incident, collapsed under the car as he came into the run down to Turn 3, sending the Japanese rookie across the gravel and into the barriers.

Kobayashi managed to avoid doing serious damage to his car and climbed out unaided while once again the marshals were entrusted with the task of cleaning up the debris as he hit a polystyrene braking board on his way to the gravel.

Six minutes later the session re-started with Jarno Trulli putting in his first time of the day, a 1:33.799, over six seconds off Button's pace, however, it was di Grassi who was still the quickest of the new team drivers in 19th place. Kovalainen added his name to the list of spinnners.

Rosberg moved up to first place before losing out to Kubica, who posted a 1:26.927, while his team-mate Petrov spun his Renault. Pedro de la Rosa returned to the track after the Sauber team checked over his car to ensure he wouldn't suffer a similar wing failure to his team-mate, however, seconds later his car stopped on the side of the track.

Another incident for Petrov saw him damage the under side of his car as he rode the kerbs before spinning while Senna took the grass as he went off track.

Massa improved up to fourth place, Alonso to seventh and di Resta to 14th. Petrov moved up to ninth place after the chequered flag had fallen while Kovalainen parked his Lotus on the side of the track.

McLaren 1-2 in second Australian practice
26 March 2010

British World Champions Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button led the way as rain struck the second practice session at Albert Park on Friday afternoon. With nobody able to lower the top times after the light showers, hometown hero Mark Webber finished third as Michael Schumacher ended the day quickest of the two Mercedes.

After Robert Kubica and Renault topped the timesheets in the first of two 90-minute practice sessions on the streets of Melbourne, the sun disappeared for the second as track temperatures fell to 24°C (75°F) for the majority of the session, just two above those of the air on a pleasant day for 68,000 spectators, bar the intermittent rain.

Renault continued to rack up useful mileage with Kubica, who elected to stay on-track with Bridgestone's Intermediate tyres following the longest shower and notched up 28 laps, although Jaime Alguersuari's Toro Rosso circulated by far the most times, with 43 laps to the Spaniard's name.

With rain having fallen just as the green light came on following by another depositing several minutes later, more drops fell from the sky towards the end of the period as several drivers managed to lower their best efforts on a dryer surface; Michael Schumacher was one of them, finishing fourth quickest and out-pacing team-mate Nico Rosberg for the first time this year, although Hamilton remained on top with a best of 1:25.801 for McLaren, 1.1 seconds quicker than the best Practice 1 time.

Team-mate Jenson Button, winner of the Australian Grand Prix for Brawn GP 12 months ago, looked to be challenging for the top spot after the clock stopped although a slow moving Pedro de la Rosa ensured that the current title holder was forced to take evasive action on the exit of Turn 12, signalling more drama for Sauber after Kamui Kobayashi lost his front wing due to a failure earlier in the afternoon.

The Hispania team failed to complete a lap in second practice as Bruno Senna remained rooted to the pit lane and team-mate Karun Chandhok's car broke down before reaching Turn 1, ending the Indian's day prematurely as he proceeded to watch the remainder of the session from the pit wall clad in jeans and t-shirt.

Ferrari had a relatively quiet time as championship leaders Alonso and Massa completed a total of 41 laps between them before finishing 15th and 17th in the day's final classification, sandwiching the Red Bull of Sebastian Vettel which placed two wheels on the grass and spun into the gravel at Turn 6 in the final three minutes, then managing to rejoin the track.

Third and final practice in Melbourne begins at 2pm local time (GMT +11) on Saturday and can also be followed live on GPUpdate.net

Note: A reminder to European viewers than clocks will go forward by 1 hour before the race on Sunday morning

Prac Two: Hamilton leads Button

Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button made the most of a brief dry spell to top the timesheets in Friday's second practice for the Aussie GP.

With light rain falling at intermittent periods throughout the 90-minute session, Hamilton clocked a 1:25.801 during an early dry spell, putting him 0.275s up on his team-mate.

And with more rain coming down later it appeared as if the McLaren drivers would easily walk the session before a drying track near the end of practice saw Mark Webber and Michael Schumacher both put in a charge.

The duo, though, were unable to match the pace of the MP4-25, finishing third and fourth respectively.

Report: Unlike the first session, Practice Two began under gathering clouds with a few drops of rain starting to fall on the track, dropping the temperature of the asphalt to just 26'C. A few drivers ventured out for their installation laps on a track that was quickly becoming rather slippery. Most, though, opted to stay in the pits.

With the rain abating, Rubens Barrichello set the first time of the session, a 1:31.006, with his team-mate Nico Hulkenberg taking second place. Hulkenberg went on to overhaul Barrichello while Mark Webber took third place. Nico Rosberg was the next in the P1 slot while Practice One pace-setter Robert Kubica moved into third place behind Barrichello and ahead of Hulkenberg.

With more drivers venturing out, the timesheets continued to change as Lewis Hamilton took third place before being dropped by Robert Kubica. Tonio Luizzi went seventh, Pedro de la Rosa fifth and Jenson Button tenth. Kamui Kobayashi, back on track after his earlier incidents, moved up to ninth place while Jarno Trulli went 12th.

Button was the next to lead the way, overhauling Rosberg as he clocked a 1:26.735. However, seconds later he was beaten by Hamilton as the 2008 Champ shaved 0.087s off his team-mate's time.

Vitaly Petrov, who was earlier caught speeding in the pit lane, run wide at Turn 13 while Adrian Sutil put his Force India up into third place before he was dropped by Petrov. Hamilton lowered the benchmark time to a 1:25.801.

Problems for Karun Chandhok meant he had to park his Hispania car on the side of the track, bringing out the yellow flags as the marshals push the car to safety.

With the rain coming down again, the drivers headed back into the pits, taking the break to evaluate the data gathered during the first half of the session.

They were soon back out again as the light rain continued to fall with Jaime Alguersuari, Rosberg, Petrov, Kubica and de la Rosa trying their hand at the slippery conditions. Alguersuari's lap time, though, was an indication of how much the rain altered the circuit as he was 25s off the pace.

Michael Schumacher, one of five drivers without a time to their name, made his way out, clocking a 1:39.944, 14s off Hamilton's P1 time, which was set on a dry track. The German only completed a handful of laps before heading back into the pits with graining tyres.

Sutil had a tricky moment over the exit of the Turn Four kerbs but manages to keep it together as the drivers continued to put in the laps but without any impact on the timesheets due to the now wet track.

Alguersuari joined the list of those running wide and onto the grass at Turn 15. A few minutes later Buemi followed his team-mate onto the grass.

With the track finally drying out, both Ferraris, Red Bulls and Schumacher ventured out. Webber improved his time but stayed P13, Schumacher moved up to 14th place, 11th and then lept to third before he was dropped by Webber, who moved up from 14th to third.

Schumacher, though, should be satisfied with his efforts - his position of P4 in the timesheets represents the first time that he has finished above his Mercedes team-mate in a timed session this season .

Times - Practice 2

1. Hamilton McLaren-Mercedes 1:25.801 13 laps

Kubica smiling after topping first practice
26 March 2010 / Results / Photos

Robert Kubica was pleased to have led a practice session in a Renault for the first time on Friday. Despite ending the day slowest of the two luminous cars in a second session which featured adverse weather conditions, the Pole led the way from Nico Rosberg as the field first rolled out of the Albert Park pits.

Setting a best lap time of 1:26.927, ex BMW man Kubica enjoyed 22 laps on his way to first place early in the afternoon before completing another 22 circulations, mostly on Intermediate tyres in damp conditions, later on in the day.

"It was a good Friday," he said. "This morning everything went well with just some small balance issues, so we did some setup work to get used to the track, which is very different to Bahrain and the tracks where we tested over the winter.

"The second session was damp, so we did some runs on Intermediates to get a feeling for the wet conditions. Overnight we will work to try and improve the balance so that we get the maximum from the car tomorrow."

Webber fastest in front of home crowd
27 March 2010 / Results / Photos

Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber topped the time sheets on Saturday morning in Melbourne as the Australian completed his fastest lap in 1.24.719. Webber ended ahead of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher. Both HRT drivers stranded their cars on track with hydraulic problems.

Saturday's free practice session was declared wet by the FIA officials before the session started but the track remained completely dry for the entire session.

The session was interrupted when Bruno Senna had to stop his car at the side of the track due to a hydraulic problem. The Brazilian already faced hydraulic problems on Friday in Melbourne and it is unsure whether or not the Hispania Racing Team driver is able to get his car ready ahead of this afternoon's qualifying session in Melbourne.

With just two minutes to go in the 60-minute free practice session Senna's team-mate Karun Chandhok caused yellow flags as he too had to park his car. The driver from India also faced a technical problem and was unable to return his car to the pitbox.

It was an interesting fight on top of the time sheets. Michael Schumacher topped the time sheets for a while, which was the first time this season. Red Bull drivers Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber are clearly strong 'Down Under' but are closely followed by the Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren drivers.

It promises to become a close fight in qualifying this afternoon as qualifying will start at 17.00 local Melbourne time.

Prac Three: Webber on top at home

Mark Webber is looking strong ahead of qualifying for the Aussie GP as the Red Bull racer set the pace in Saturday's final practice.

The Aussie, who is gearing up for his ninth F1 grand prix on home soil, crossed the line with a 1:24.719 to beat Ferrari's Fernando Alonso to the P1 slot by 0.210s.

Michael Schumacher, who on Friday beat team-mate Nico Rosberg for the first time this season, did so again on Saturday, finishing in third place ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg.

Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton were next in line.

Report: With a track temperature of 29'C and a strong breeze blowing, the final practice session for the Australian GP weekend got underway with the drivers quickly hitting the track for their installation laps.

Vitaly Petrov clocked the first time of the day, a 1:28.597 for Renault's Russian driver, while Pedro de la Rosa took second place ahead of Timo Glock. Felipe Massa quickly took to the top of the timesheets as the Brazilian shaved 0.081s off Petrov's time after losing a huge amount in the final sector.

Petrov returned to head back into the P1 slot but again lost out to Massa while Kamui Kobayashi took fourth place ahead of Nico Hulkenberg, Jaime Alguersuari and Glock. Hulkenberg impoved to third with Sebastian Vettel and Robert Kubica slotting in behind him.

With all 24 drivers out on track putting in the final miles before qualifying, traffic became a problem with some running nose-to-rear-wing while others were forced to slow down to avoid catching slower cars on their runs.

Nico Rosberg was the next into the P1 slot with a 1:26.463, however, he was deposed by Vettel as Michael Schumacher put his Mercedes W01 up into fourth place. Lewis Hamilton put in a blinder, including two fastest sectors, as he went quickest of all with a 1:25.706, 0.536s up on Vettel's best. Schumacher pushed hard, moving up to second place but was dropped by first Vettel and then Mark Webber.

Problems for Bruno Senna as the Hispania driver pulls over onto the side of the track as his HRT lost power.

With a clear track in front of him, Fernando Alonso improved to third place and then took first on his following lap with a 1:25.559. Jenson Button was another on the move, climbing to fourth place but dropping one when Schumacher went second and then quickest, a 1:25.494 for the seven-time World Champ.

Webber was the next to lead the way as the Aussie clocked a 1:25.309 to take the P1 slot from Schumacher. Hamilton then put in a charge, clocking a fastest first sector time. But like his team-mate moments before, the McLaren driver lost time in the final sector and finished fourth. Button could only manage P7.

Alonso climbed to second place while Webber put in two fastest sectors to lower the benchmark to a 1:24.794. However, Alonso came back, putting in a fastest middle sector to close the gap to 0.135s.

A small incident between a Sauber and Sebastien Buemi as the latter tapped the back of the C29 as the duo dealt with increased traffic in the final five minutes of practice.

Fastest middle sector for Schumacher moved him up to fourth place while Tonio Liuzzi took tenth before sliding through the first corner and only just keeping it together.

Schumacher took another position, P3 for the German, while more problems for Hispania as Karun Chandhok joined his team-mate Senna in parking his car on the side of the track.

Webber finished the session at the top of the timesheets with Alonso and Schumacher right behind him.
