Mastering Montreal - a set-up guide for Canada

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, which will host this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix, is one of the most unusual circuits on the Formula One calendar. With a mix of long straights and low-speed chicanes hemmed in by unforgiving concrete walls, it’s a bit like combining Monaco with Monza and therefore poses some unique challenges for car set-up. Renault explain more…

In terms of aero, Montreal will see the cars running with the lowest levels of downforce so far this year. “It’s only Monza where we will run less downforce,” confirms Vitaly Petrov’s race engineer Mark Slade. “We will therefore bring different wings that haven’t been used before to ensure good straight-line speed. That will give the car quite a different feel and the drivers will need to adjust to this.”

Because those long straights are followed by low-speed chicanes and hairpins, the brakes can expect a punishing workload this weekend. “Montreal is by far the toughest circuit on the calendar for the brakes with 16 percent of the lap spent on the brakes, which compares to 12 percent at Monza,” continues Slade. “There are four big stops where the drivers are braking from over 300 km/h plus down to around 120 km/h, which puts enormous energy levels through the braking system. And because it’s such a short lap, we’re doing those five big stops for 70 laps during the race.”

With cars starting the race fuelled to the brim, the demands on the brakes will be even tougher than in previous years. Compared with the last Canadian Grand Prix in 2008, we can expect around 10 percent more energy going through the braking system.

The low downforce package means the braking contribution caused by aerodynamic drag will be reduced, putting even more burden on the brake system. “The discs see very high peak temperatures for much longer than usual in Montreal,” says Slade. “We therefore need to keep a close eye on the wear and temperature sensors, which let us know if we’re getting marginal on brake wear because it’s not something the driver can feel in the car.”

The ideal Montreal set-up also demands good traction and a car that can cope with the bumpy track surface. “If the car is bouncing through the air then you’re losing grip,” continues Slade, “so the focus is on trying to keep the wheels in contact with the ground by softening up the suspension to improve ride over the bumps. Running softer suspension also gives the drivers good mechanical grip through the chicanes where it’s important to be aggressive because there’s a lot of lap time to be found.”

In terms of traction out of the low-speed corners, the teams will be keen to avoid high levels of rear tyre degradation. “To ensure good traction we might compromise mid-corner performance of the car in order to have better traction and protect the rear tyres,” Slade concludes. “This almost inevitably causes more understeer on corner turn-in, but it’s about making the right compromise for a set-up that will work for the whole race.”

Driver confidence around Montreal should not be underestimated either, and kissing the walls is just as important for finding those final few tenths as it is in Monaco. “The walls are very close on the exit of the chicanes, especially Turn Four,” confirms Renault driver Robert Kubica. “If you can scrape it by millimetres you will be two tenths quicker than if you miss it by two feet.”

Round 8: Canada
09 June 2010

Montreal makes a welcome return to Formula 1 this weekend after spending a year off in 2009. The semi-street, Île Notre-Dame track also signals the return to the calendar of North America and a venue which has long since possessed a reputation of throwing up bizarre race results.

Gilles Villeneuve: 1950-1982

After Melbourne's Albert Park and legendary Monte-Carlo, Montreal hosts the third street race of the season on the back of a highly eventful weekend in Turkey which featured the highest profile collision between team-mates since 1999. A fantastic scenario, then, to lead up to the much-awaited return of the Canadian Grand Prix.

The 2.7-mile circuit is named after local hero Gilles Villeneuve - 6-time Grand Prix winner and father of 1997 Champion Jacques - who was killed in action during qualifying for the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder.

The track is situated on Île Notre-Dame, an artificial island in the Saint Lawrence River which runs alongside the Saint Lawrence Seaway, from which the foghorns of ships can often be heard during the race.

Didier Pironi's Ligier races to a podium place in 1980

The isle, which was constructed ahead of the 1967 Montreal Expo, was created in just ten months and by using some 15 million tons of rock that had in fact been dug up in order to make way for the city's Metro line two years earlier.

The ever-buzzing downtown - which boasts a night life generally regarded as the best on the F1 schedule - first welcomed the sport in 1978, when the local crowd was thrilled to see the man himself - Villeneuve, driving a Ferrari - take the chequered flag from Jody Scheckter's Wolf and the second Italian car of Carlos Reutemann.

Back then, the track - despite looking, in essence, very much the same as nowadays - did sport a radical difference, as the back straight between L'Epingle (the hairpin) and what is now the final chicane sported a chicane of its own, preceded by what was then the start/finish area.

A dejected Nigel Mansell dominated before his Williams stopped on the final lap in 1991

Now, the more modern but still cramped pit complex feeds into Virage Senna (Turn 2) via a safer exit lane, which itself was installed for 2002 in order to prevent such incidents as the rejoining Michael Schumacher forcing compatriot Heinz-Harald Frentzen into the gravel in 1998.

Jacques Villeneuve was never blessed with luck at his home race

In fact, the late 90s provided an exhilarating cocktail of drama in the east-central province of Quebec, with Villeneuve Junior's Williams losing control and crashing into the wall at the final corner in 1997 before Olivier Panis broke both legs later in the afternoon, with his Prost having headed directly into the tyre barriers at the flat-out Turn 5. 12 months later, Alex Wurz's Benetton sensationally barrel-rolled its way into the first corner.

1999 also threw up a large number of surprises, as three of the four title winners in the field hit the retaining wall on the outside of Turn 13 which, even under normal circumstances, has cars brushing its concrete. Ever since, the spot has been dubbed 'Champions' Wall' and has welcomed a number of unenviable souls since. The Mika Häkkinen-won race was also the first ever to feature a Safety Car finish, with only Australia 2009 and Monaco 2010 having borne such a similarity.

1998: Alexander Wurz's Benetton cartwheels its way to Turn 1

The next consecutive pair of crazy Canadian races came in 2007 and 2008, the most two recent events at the venue and which both introduced new winners in Lewis Hamilton and Robert Kubica, the latter being a 1-2 finish for BMW and what turned out to be the Munich manufacturer's only significant success before pulling out of F1 at the end of last year.

Kubica's triumph was all the more respectable, however, when one considers that the Pole suffered one of Formula 1's most frightening accidents in history the year before.

Having connected with Jarno Trulli's Toyota on the approach to the hairpin, Kubica's car was subject to strengths of a terrifying 75 times the force of gravity, miraculously surviving before taking the chequered flag a year later - incidentally, at the end of a race in which Hamilton was the subject of great embarrassment after crashing into rival Kimi Räikkönen's stationary Ferrari beside a red light at the pit lane exit.

Robert Kubica's BMW sustained a terrible impact in 2007

As if the circuit isn't likely to throw up enough dramas of its own in 2010, not least with the most cars on-track in qualifying since the mid 1990s, the weather could also take a turn for the worst as thunderstorms have been forecast for Saturday night and parts of Sunday. The last wet race in Montreal was staged a decade ago, when a problem-affected Michael Schumacher was protected to the line by Ferrari team-mate Rubens Barrichello.

With the help of their f-ducts, which are expected to shine on the back straight, McLaren should be favourites to run at the front this year and fears have already been sparked over Red Bull's brakes; the circuit is highly dependant on efficient braking systems and this has already been a worrying area for the Milton Keynes team this season.

On the other hand - regardless of recent form - if anywhere can deliver a truly out of the ordinary outcome, Montreal certainly can.

Laps: 70
Record: 1:13.622 - R. Barrichello / Ferrari / 2004

Local start time: 12 noon (BST -5)

Parts of Canadian track resurfaced
09 June 2010

Race organisers have confirmed that several sections of the Circuit de Gilles Villeneuve have been resurfaced ahead of this weekend's race, with some areas having suffered from heavily worn tarmac even before the last race began in 2008.

FIA Technical Delegate Charlie Whiting inspected the surface shortly before the start in 2008

With both the 2006 and 2008 races having featured severe tarmac degradation, causing a number of cars to run wide at the hairpin in particular, new tarmac has been laid and is not expected to suffer from such issues this year.

Also, the gravel traps at Turns 6 and 8 have now been replaced with more modern asphalt run-off areas and several additional guardrail posts have been installed around the circuit.

Button tops opening Montreal practice
11 June 2010

Jenson Button's McLaren led the way as Formula 1 made its return to Canada on Friday. In a generally incident-free session, team-mate Lewis Hamilton finished third as Mercedes GP pairing Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg ended the 90-minute period second and fourth quickest.

Race fans strive for the craziest of vantage points…

The semi-street Circuit de Gilles Villeneuve was absent from the calendar in 2009 although the venue has already reconfirmed its popularity this year by achieving sell-out crowds, with several new grandstands set up in order to cater for the high demand.

With air temperatures in the high teens and the track surface not managing to reach anything more than the low 20s, it was an overcast morning as the action began at 10am local time, with several spots of rain causing a lack of grip which saw several cars overshoot chicanes.

Heavy showers hit the venue on Thursday and the threat remains for the rest of a weekend on which no less than eight drivers tackle the challenging track for the first time. Sutil, Vettel, Liuzzi, Kubica, Webber, Rosberg and Schumacher elected to complete two installation laps instead of the usual one although the first lap time - which came from Kobayashi's Sauber - did not emerge until over half an hour in.

Most drivers suffered from a lack of grip on a circuit which, according to Heikki Kovalainen via team radio, resembled a rally stage; Turn 1 and the hairpin proved the most treacherous, with the latter being the scene of a near-miss under braking between Schumacher's Mercedes and the Renault of Vitaly Petrov.

Fortunately, there were no issues of a more wild nature although a groundhog could be seen crossing the track at Turn 4 under green flag conditions, fortunately doing so with no competitors in the vicinity.

With the drops of rain ensuring that the track temperature dropped, no driver was able to better Button's leading effort of 1:18.127, although the Mercedes pilots were able to squeeze ahead of Hamilton. Sebastian Vettel and Robert Kubica led the way for Red Bull and Renault in fifth and sixth as Fernando Alonso verified himself as Ferrari's top representative of the session, seventh quickest but six tenths down.

Pedro de la Rosa suffered the only spin, cautiously missed by Kovalainen at the hairpin as the Finn's team-mate remained in the pits; however, Trulli's gearbox problem was not the only woe at the bottom end of the pit lane as Lucas di Grassi, after being rooted to the Virgin Racing garage after just three laps, then stopped at Turn 6 as he returned to the track.

17:08:07   Schumacher lifts off as he sees the flashing yellow caution lights at Turn 5, which are there for di Grassi
17:07:15   Schumacher is making pizza with his steering wheel at the hairpin; it's very greasy down there

16:46:42   In fact, Davidson's incident was actually during that year's race
16:45:51   Talking of the groundhogs, by the way, one of those did actually play a role here in 2007 when Anthony Davidson's Super Aguri hit one in qualifying
16:44:28   Chandhok cuts across Turn 1, going straight on
16:44:14   CURRENT ORDER: Hulkenberg, Kobayashi, Barrichello, Buemi, Alguersuari, Trulli, Kovalainen, Senna, Chandhok

16:34:09   Senna has taken a trip across the grass at Turns 8 and 9, the chicane before the hairpin
16:33:14   FIA Race Director Charlie Whiting has also mentioned that there is a small trail of oil in the final chicane's braking zone
16:32:53   Spots are rain are falling at the hairpin, we believe
16:32:21   That pair plus Senna are the current three cars on-track

16:31:16   Kobayashi sets the first time of the session, over half an hour in: 1:28.723
16:30:47   That'll be either for light rain or perhaps some fluids which a car may have deposited there
16:30:25   There is a red and yellow, slippery surface flag out just before the last chicane
16:29:52   1 HOUR REMAINING
16:29:46   Alguersuari, Kobayashi and Rosberg are on-track
16:28:57   Sector 3 then leads back round to the grid

16:22:01   Glock has pitted too, so only di Grassi remains on-track now
16:21:44   Sutil comes into the pit lane
16:20:56   70 MINUTES REMAINING
16:20:51   ...the reigning British F3 Champion
16:20:43   Mark Webber is now in discussion with Red Bull and Toro Rosso tester Daniel Ricciardo
16:20:02   The pit lane walkabout was rain-affected yesterday, there were many umbrellas up
16:19:40   There are several dark clouds around, so rain remains a threat
16:19:26   Sutil, Glock and Rosberg are the three Germans on-track at the moment
16:19:10   Glock is staying out for now; he's on his sixth lap now
16:14:23   So it's the two Virgin Racing cars plus Barrichello on-track now
16:14:11   Correction, Glock remains on-track; the timing system displayed the wrong information briefly
16:13:43   di Grassi's Virgin is on-track now, with Glock having come back in
16:13:25   At the moment, teams are simply testing systems such as the pit lane speed limiters and that the radios work at all parts of the track
16:12:54   Hulkenberg returns to the pits as compatriot Glock goes out for Virgin Racing
16:12:44   The Australian, incidentally, has re-signed with his team for 2011 only at the moment

Vettel ends Montreal Friday on top
11 June 2010

Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing moved atop the timesheets in the second free practice session on Friday. Fernando Alonso and Nico Rosberg ensured that Ferrari and Mercedes also made the top three in Canada as Lewis Hamilton led the way for McLaren from seventh position.

2nd Free Practice

21:32:21   Final practice in Canada begins at 10am local time on Saturday (BST -5)
21:31:38   There is rain forecast for tomorrow night and Sunday so Montreal Magic could be supplied...
21:30:50   Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko talks with Vettel
21:30:39   Alonso is 2nd from Rosberg, Webber and Massa
21:30:33   So it's Vettel P1 on 1:16.877
21:30:24   Trulli goes onto a final lap
21:30:17   Alonso dives into the pits
21:30:15   Times have dropped spectacularly
21:30:09   It's unlikely we're going to see any improvement
21:30:03   CHEQUERED FLAG
21:29:25   Vettel's finished for the day; he's P1 and climbs out of his car
21:29:17   1 MINUTE REMAINING
21:26:53   3 MINUTES REMAINING
21:25:22   Trulli's back in the pits now after 7 laps
21:24:53   5 MINUTES REMAINING
21:24:34   CURRENT ORDER: Vettel (pits), Alonso, Rosberg, Webber, Massa (pits), Sutil, Hamilton, Kubica, Schumacher and Liuzzi
21:24:15   Nico completes his fastest lap but doesn't improve and stays third
21:24:04   Rosberg shoots past Hamilton on the back straight
21:23:42   Many cars have been across that lawn today...
21:23:36   Chandhok's gone off again, this time bouncing across the grass at Turn 8
21:23:24   We have have had no major incidents here today
21:23:13   Massa, Barrichello, de la Rosa, Kobayashi, Kovalainen and di Grassi are in the garages
21:22:19   It was actually Vettel in the Red Bull; he was close with Schumacher
21:22:09   The Hispania was Chandhok
21:22:01   An Hispania and Toro Rosso both run wide at the hairpin
21:21:41   The track surface is up to 28°C
21:21:32   The ambient temperatures are now 22°C
21:21:16   At this stage it certainly looks likely that Vettel's best time will not be beaten, as teams perform longer stints
21:20:53   The quickest Lotus is 3 seconds off the pace, the quicker HRT 4 seconds off and fastest Virgin 4.6 off
21:20:29   It's Lotus, HRT, HRT, Lotus, Virgin, Virgin at the back
21:20:20   Virgin are clearly last at the moment, quite frankly
21:20:12   Jarno is already ahead of both Virgin Racing cars
21:20:03   Trulli passes Rosberg under braking for Turn 8
21:19:52   10 MINUTES REMAINING

21:18:35   Only 20 of the 24 cars are in the pit lane now
21:18:28   CURRENTLY IN PITS: Barrichello, Kovalainen, Chandhok and Senna
21:18:02   It's very much like rubbing a school rubber constantly on a piece of paper
21:17:45   That relates to when the tyre begins to lose grip, as small balls of rubber come loose on its surface
21:17:29   Vettel is suffering from front graining problems with his tyres
21:15:26   Team-mate Kovalainen is currently 19th and quickest of the new teams' cars
21:15:11   Trulli has completed his first lap of the session and goes onto a flyer now
21:14:59   Just under 15 minutes to go now
21:14:21   His Renault then dropped back out of the pack just after the red lights went out in 2004
21:14:04   Those who were watching in 1998 and 1999 will have seen Jarno getting caught up in first corner shunts for Prost
21:13:14   Trulli finally emerges from the Lotus garage
21:13:07   ...and on longer stints, too
21:12:48   Most cars are on the Super Soft tyres now
21:12:28   Jenson stays 11th in the McLaren
21:12:22   The Champion is currently 11th
21:12:14   Button heads for the final chicane, Turns 12 and 13
21:11:52   The reason is an electrical problem, which allowed the gearbox to be jammed in 5th gear
21:11:28   ...the Italian's Lotus was stranded in Practice 1 for most of the session and is yet to come out yet this afternoon
21:11:10   Trulli has having a nightmare of a day at a track where he's already had several nightmares since 1997...
21:10:44   He's currently fastest on 1:16.877
21:10:35   Fastest man Vettel is back out on-track
21:09:55   20 MINUTES REMAINING
21:06:47   CURRENT ORDER: Vettel, Alonso, Rosberg, Webber, Massa, Sutil, Hamilton, Kubica, Schumacher, Liuzzi
21:06:34   Alonso has just set his personal best time in Sector 1, currently 86 thousandths off Vettel
21:06:16   Petrov starts a flying lap in the Renault
21:06:06   CURRENTLY ON-TRACK: Alonso, Rosberg, Hulkenberg, Petrov, Kovalainen, di Grassi
21:05:39   There's a particularly large black cloud over the track near the hairpin
21:03:33   Kovalainen runs off at Turn 8; so many cars have done that today
21:03:22   He now moves to within 86 thousandths of P1
21:03:11   Alonso is absolutely on the limit through the final chicane
21:03:02   Webber has just set the best second sector time
21:02:05   His last sector was the best so far
21:01:56   The 2006 winner goes 2nd, 1 tenth down on Vettel
21:01:40   Alonso is coming into the final corner now...
21:01:17   Sutil moves up to 8th as he passes Glock down the start/finish straight
21:00:29   Massa was briefly up to 3rd but Webber's taken that spot now
21:00:20   Vettel, Rosberg, Webber, Massa, Alonso is the order
21:00:11   30 MINUTES REMAINING
21:00:04   Heinz-Harald Frentzen had a nasty accident there in 1999, crashing the Jordan
20:59:31   The Ferrari skips across the grass and is the closest to the barriers there so far
20:59:20   Alonso gets an armful of opposite lock and he's off at Turn 4
20:56:11   That's the first sub-1:17.000 time this weekend
20:55:40   He's now heading for the final chicane, Turns 12 and 13
20:55:31   Vettel is heading for an even quicker lap time, with a personal best in Sector 2 now
20:55:18   Vettel, Massa, Barrichello, Alguersuari, Chandhok and Senna are on-track
20:55:00   Sebastian now sets the quickest Sector 1 time

20:52:56   David Coulthard is sporting some ice blue shades in the pit lane...
20:51:52   Lotus have actually taken the gearbox off Trulli's car in the garage
20:51:01   Trulli's Lotus is still stuck in the pit lane with gearbox problems
20:49:53   40 MINUTES REMAINING
20:48:43   The McLaren looked up its left-front wheel at Turn 1
20:47:56   We can now see Hamilton circulating on the green-striped, Super Soft 'Option' tyres
20:47:44   Glock skips over the green run-off area of the final chicane
20:46:45   It was close but no damage was picked up
20:46:40   Rosberg then accelerated and pulled into the final chicane as Alguersuari dived into the pits
20:46:26   Alguersuari was on the inside line, with greater speed
20:46:18   Rosberg was coasting down the back straight, as if he was heading for the pits
20:46:06   Rosberg pulls what looked like a silly move on Alguersuari
20:45:00   It has a modified endplate, which the Woking team hopes will lowers lap times further
20:44:44   Those of you also following this session on the television will see the latest McLaren front wing, which debuts here
20:43:39   We're a full second under that already now, thanks to Rosberg and Vettel

Hamilton fastest in final free practice
12 June 2010

Lewis Hamilton completed the fastest lap in Saturday morning's free practice session. The Briton completed his best lap in 1.16.058 and finished ahead of Webber, Alonso and Schumacher. Karun Chandhok missed the entire session due to hydraulic problems.
Saturday's free practice session started at a slightly damp track at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. As the lights turned green at 10.00am in Montreal most drivers completed their installation lap but after that remained in their pitboxes until track conditions were getting better.

There were problems for Nico Rosberg at the start of the session. The German Mercedes driver returned from his installation lap and according to the latest reports he had problems with the clutch. His team worked hard during the entire session to get his car back on track. With just three minutes to go Rosberg managed to get out on track and complete one timed lap.

At Hispania Racing Karun Chandhok didn't get much further than the end of the pitlane. His session ended right away. The driver from India faced hydraulic problems again and will have to start today's qualifying session without having completed a single lap today.

Today's one hour session saw just one incident when Lucas di Grassi lost control of his Virgin Racing car at the hairpin. Di Grassi crashed into the wall in the final minute of free practice.

Hamilton snatches Montreal pole from Red Bull
12 June 2010

Lewis Hamilton has become the first non-Red Bull driver to clinch pole position in the 2010 season, courtesy of a rapid lap in Canada on Saturday. The 2008 Champion will start ahead of Mark Webber as Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso make up Row 2. Michael Schumacher could manage no more than 13th for Mercedes.

Qualifying

20:04:04   Thank for you joining us for a dramatic qualifying session from Montreal
20:03:49   So Hamilton is sitting on the side of his cockpit rolling down the back straight!
20:03:33   "Lewis, we need you to stop on the circuit please. There is not enough fuel and we need a fuel sample," Andy Latham tells Hamilton
20:02:26   Sutil and Rosberg will make up Row 5
20:02:21   Webber was brushing the Champions' Wall on his last lap
20:02:10   Button is 5th from Liuzzi, Massa and Kubica
20:02:02   So it's Hamilton, Webber, Vettel and Alonso
20:01:57   Red Bull will start on the harder tyres tomorrow
20:01:46   It's 3 Montreal qualifying sessions and 3 pole position for Hamilton, brilliant
20:01:37   McLaren beat Red Bull in qualifying for the first time this season
20:01:29   Hamilton stayed on the inside line heading to the first corner and Lewis Hamilton is absolutely delighted
20:01:11   Hamilton does it!
20:01:08   Vettel up to 2nd, then
20:01:03   It's Webber, Vettel, Alonso
20:00:59   Hamilton heads for the final chicane...
20:00:53   Hamilton is heading for pole; can he beat Red Bull in 2010?
20:00:45   Hamilton sets the best first sector time
20:00:37   He's up to 4th
20:00:34   Button is very wide at the final corner
20:00:29   Vettel is 9th and not improving
20:00:21   CHEQUERED FLAG
20:00:15   He's up to P5
20:00:10   Massa is 9th and heading for the line...
20:00:05   He can finish this last lap
20:00:00   Hamilton crosses the line with 9 seconds to go
19:59:28   Hamilton blows it at Turn 8, he's lost a lot of time on this lap
19:59:17   Liuzzi is P4 for Force India!
19:59:12   Webber, Alonso, Hamilton is the top 3
19:59:05   Hamilton is at Turn 7 now
19:59:00   So it's Webber, Alonso, Hamillton
19:58:53   Webber now beats it!
19:58:46   Alonso goes P1 now!
19:58:44   Rosberg is out of shape at the last corner
19:58:36   Webber is just 0.034 slower than Hamilton!
19:58:13   Hamilton, Webber, Alonso, Button, Kubica
19:58:08   He's got 2 more!
19:58:05   Vettel skips the final chicane and wrecks his lap
19:57:56   Button goes 4th, ahead of Massa
19:57:50   Liuzzi is next from Rosberg, Vettel, Kubica and Sutil
19:57:44   Hamilton, Webber, Alonso, Massa, Button is the top five
19:57:33   All cars on track now
19:57:29   The Red Bulls are on the harder, Medium tyres
19:57:23   Webber is heading for P1, this is going to be very close
19:57:15   Will Hamilton be the first Red Bull-beater in qualifying this year?
19:57:01   3 MINUTES REMAINING
19:56:56   Vettel is currently 7th but guns the throttle out of the final corner now
19:56:36   Massa goes 3rd now
19:56:31   Hamilton is still 4 tenths quicker than Webber
19:56:23   Webber goes 2nd now
19:56:20   It's Hamilton, Alonso, Button, Webber, Vettel
19:56:14   Some are using the Medium compound, others the green-striped Super Softs
19:56:03   The leading teams are not all on the same tyres
19:55:50   Alonso turns into Turn 8 with both left tyres on the white line
19:55:36   Only Hamilton is in the pits now
19:55:26   Vettel weaves down the back straight to build up tyre temperatures
19:55:12   5 MINUTES REMAINING
19:55:07   Webber goes P4
19:55:02   ...he goes 3rd but is much slower
19:54:57   Alonso is next to set a lap time...
19:54:13   Only Rosberg and Sutil are yet to leave the pits
19:53:45   Hamilton is much quicker, almost a second quicker: 1:15.500
19:53:35   Button sets the first lap time: 1:16.432
19:52:58   Button is sliding around a lot; he's not got this car right together...
19:52:38   Q3, correction
19:52:31   As Button starts the first flying lap of Q2
19:52:23   Webber and Alonso leave the pits now
19:51:40   It's still just the two McLarens out at the moment
19:51:31   Hamilton knows that he's never been beaten to pole here
19:51:22   Button took pole here for B.A.R in 2005
19:50:55   Button and Hamilton are first out in the two McLarens
19:50:46   McLaren look very strong, as predicted beforehand
19:50:39   Surely, if Red Bull's pole run is going to end anywhere, it'll be here
19:50:28   No cars leave the pits immediately
19:50:23   So, we have no Michael Schumacher as Q3 begins
19:50:11   Q3 BEGINS
19:50:08   GREEN LIGHT

19:46:37   19) Kovalainen 20) Trulli 21) Glock 22) Senna 23) di Grassi 24) Chandhok

19:44:42   Massa dropped down to 10th there, he was in the pits...
19:44:08   He was banging his steering wheel for that!
19:44:02   Petrov messed up his last lap at the hairpin
19:43:56   Q2 DROP ZONE: Barrichello, Hulkenberg, Schumacher, Petrov, Buemi, Alguersuari, de la Rosa
19:43:03   Replays show Schumacher cutting the last chicane, that's why he coasted over the line
19:42:51   Make that 13th now as Barrichello goes 11th!
19:42:44   That's bad news...he's only 12th
19:42:39   Schumacher slows at the line and is out in Q2 for the first time this year
19:42:27   Schumacher is coming now...
19:42:24   Schumacher is down to 12th as Hulkenberg goes 11th
19:42:15   Liuzzi moves up from 10th to 8th now
19:42:07   Michael's second sector wasn't fantastic...
19:41:59   Can Michael improve?
19:41:55   So Schumacher is 11th now
19:41:52   Button moves up to 7th
19:41:47   Button is only 11th but he's at the final chicane now...
19:41:39   Barrichello goes 13th but has one more lap
19:41:25   Button must, must improve on this lap
19:41:21   So Schumacher is 10th and Button 11th
19:41:17   10th, correction
19:41:08   Schumacher is down to 11th
19:41:04   Liuzzi moves up to P9, great stuff
19:40:56   4th placed Webber pits after improving
19:40:50   He'll have time for one more after, if he needs it
19:40:44   Button starts what could be his last lap now
19:40:37   He needs to warm his tyres up because he's 9th
19:40:31   Button is weaving down the back straight
19:40:06   2 MINUTES REMAINING
19:39:57   Anybody who starts a flying lap before the chequered flag comes out may finish it
19:39:43   We have just over 2 minutes to go until Q2 comes to an end

19:39:13   CURRENT ORDER: Hamilton, Vettel, Kubica, Alonso, Rosberg, Webber, Massa, Sutil, Button, Schumacher
19:39:00   Webber is still 6th but sets a personal best time in Sector 1

19:38:26   At the moment, the drop zone consists of two Williams, two Toro Rossos, Liuzzi, Petrov and de la Rosa
19:37:41   Only Hamilton, Rosberg, Button and de la Rosa are in the pits
19:37:13   5 MINUTES REMAINING IN Q2
19:36:52   Webber runs wide at the hairpin, so he needs an improvement
19:36:44   CURRENT Q2 DROP ZONE: Liuzzi, Barrichello, Petrov, Alguersuari, Buemi, de la Rosa, Hulkenberg
19:36:28   Hamilton and Vettel were at the front in Q1 and it's them up there again at the moment
19:36:15   Vettel is just a few hundredths slower with Kubica 3rd
19:36:03   Hamilton is P1 on 1:15.528
19:35:55   We've got just over 6 minutes to go in Q2
19:35:49   ...the championship leader is P6 at the moment

19:33:54   Ron Dennis nods in approval
19:33:44   Hamilton is far more aggressive and it's P1 for him at the moment
19:33:35   But it only puts him P9; it didn't look quick, it has to be said
19:33:23   Button takes a much tidier line through thre
19:32:54   He moves up to P4
19:32:51   Rosberg is hammering the kerbs at the final chicane
19:32:23   10 MINUTES REMAINING

19:32:02   Robert took his first and so far only F1 victory here in 2008

Hamilton snatches Montreal pole from Red Bull
12 June 2010

Lewis Hamilton has become the first non-Red Bull driver to clinch pole position in the 2010 season, courtesy of a rapid lap in Canada on Saturday. The 2008 Champion will start ahead of Mark Webber as Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso make up the second row. Michael Schumacher could manage no more than 13th for Mercedes.
For the first time since 1987, Formula 1 took a year off from Canada in 2009 although the popularity of its return was backed up by a sell-out crowd on Saturday, helped by the installation of several new grandstands around the Île Notre-Dame track.

With rain holding off, despite more being forecast for tomorrow, overnight showers confirmed another 'green' track surface for final practice as Hamilton took the top spot. Afternoon temperatures of 23°C (73°F) ensured that race fans were able to enjoy the weather conditions as well as the on-track action.

There were no major surprises in Q1, with Lotus leading the way amid F1's three new teams. However, Bruno Senna did manage to slot his Hispania car between those of Virgin Racing as 18th placed Kamui Kobayashi failed to improve and was eliminated at the earliest possible stage - a disappointing next step after scoring for Sauber last time out in Turkey.

Karun Chandhok remained 24th and last on the timesheets as he sat in the garage for the final few minutes although the Indian was always unable to start any higher up on the grid, thanks to a 5-place grid drop which is the result of a penalty after encountering a gearbox issue in final practice.

Williams were knocked out in Q2 although Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hülkenberg will be the first cars able to select their tyre compounds - as opposed to keeping their final qualifying set - as they share the sixth row. The pair of Toro Rossos also left the session after Q2, plus Petrov's Renault and de la Rosa's Sauber, although the other dropout was far more unexpected.

As Tonio Liuzzi rejuvenated himself to move into the top ten shootout, both reigning Champion Jenson Button and 7-time Montreal winner Michael Schumacher found themselves on the bubble, with the German's Mercedes making a crucial error by cutting the last chicane on its final lap - meaning the driver was forced to lift off the throttle in order to avoid a penalty. Michael will start 13th on what promises to be a exceedingly tricky Sunday.

Vettel was the German causing all the drama in Q3, as the Red Bull driver - like team-mate Webber - elected to complete qualifying on the slower but more durable Medium compound tyres as opposed to the Super Soft type. However, Sebastian blew his first attempt by also skipping over the last chicane before moving up to a brief second on his final run, then being demoted one place as Hamilton moved took pole.

Fernando Alonso gave Ferrari and Italy something else - apart from the ongoing football World Cup - to cheer about by qualifying fourth although team-mate Massa was unable to start any higher than seventh, behind Button and the superb Vitantonio Liuzzi, who beats Force India team-mate Adrian Sutil with a performance which will do his career prospects no harm at all.

Although Renault were considered underdogs entering the weekend, 2008 Canadian race victor Kubica could manage no more than eighth as Sutil and Nico Rosberg complete the top ten, with the latter's result confirming a tough afternoon all round for Mercedes GP.

Webber and Vettel looked to have secured yet another all-Red Bull front row in the dying seconds, especially after Hamilton compromised his penultimate lap by bouncing over the Turn 8 kerbs, but the Englishman made P1 in all three stages of qualifying and was last challenger to cross the finish line in Q3 with a superb lap time in the form of 1:15.105.

The Stevenage man is therefore unbeaten in Canadian Grand Prix qualifying, managing three poles from as many attempts, and he becomes the first driver to top Red Bull on a Saturday in 2010.

However, Lewis amusingly pushed his car along the back straight after being instructed to pull over by McLaren due to a shortage on fuel on the in-lap.

The 2010 Canadian Grand Prix - Round 8 of 19 in 2010 - will begin at 12 noon local time on Sunday.

Gearbox change for Webber
13 June 2010

Mark Webber will not be allowed to start Sunday's race from P2 as the Red Bull driver saw his gearbox being changed by his team on Sunday morning. Webber will now have to start from seventh while team-mate Vettel will move up to second.
At Red Bull Racing the team did not wish to take any risk with Webber's current gearbox. A Red Bull spokesperson told GPUpdate.net: "Unfortunately we had to change Mark's gearbox which will cost him five valuable places on the grid."

Mark Webber currently leads the Formula 1 championship with 93 points - five points ahead of McLaren driver Jenson Button.

Hamilton leads Button home in Canada
13 June 2010

Lewis Hamilton has picked up his second consecutive Grand Prix victory following a highly entertaining afternoon in Montreal on Sunday. The 2008 World Champion headed a McLaren 1-2 result from team-mate Jenson Button as Fernando Alonso's Ferrari made the podium, ahead of the two Red Bull Racing cars.

LAP BY LAP:

19:43:17   It's set up very nicely for the European Grand Prix in 2 weeks' time
19:41:26   So Lewis Hamilton now leads the World Championship heading to Valencia in a fortnight's time
19:40:50   Vettel stopped by the pit exit on the slowing down lap
19:40:42   ...Webber, Rosberg, Kubica, Buemi, Liuzzi, Sutil
19:40:34   FINAL POINTS POSITIONS: Hamilton, Button, Alonso, Vettel...
19:40:00   "We can do this," Hamilton tells the team via radio
19:39:09   So Schumacher is 11th
19:39:06   Liuzzi and Sutil both got past him, at Turns 6 and 8!
19:38:55   Schumacher loses 9th and 10th on the last lap
19:37:17   And it's the second consecutive McLaren 1-2 result!
19:37:10   He's absolutely delighted
19:37:06   ...Lewis Hamilton WINS the 2010 Canadian Grand Prix!
19:36:59   At the same place he won his first Grand Prix three years ago...
19:36:37   He's at the hairpin
19:36:35   Hamilton is almost home
19:36:25   FINAL LAP
19:35:23   Michael cuts the final chicane
19:35:19   Michael's rear tyres are completely destroyed
19:35:13   Liuzzi is attacking Schumacher for P9 now
19:34:19   This will be a busy late afternoon for Emerson Fittipaldi...
19:34:06   Unsurprisingly, Schumacher's chop on Massa will be investigated after the race
19:30:01   Massa has to pit for a new front wing, that's his chance of points gone...
19:29:00   Michael moved over on Felipe and pushed him onto the grass heading into the last chicane
19:28:49   Felipe went wide but now has to do another lap
19:28:40   Schumacher moves over on Massa and it's taken Felipe's front wing off!
19:28:26   Schumacher's rear tyres have gone off
19:28:09   Massa is now attacking Schumacher for 9th place
19:28:03   Kubica sets another fastest lap
19:27:05   Rosberg is P6 from Kubica, Buemi, Schumacher and Massa, who's into the points
19:26:51   Hamilton leads Button, Alonso, Vettel and Webber
19:26:45   He's 7th after his last stop
19:26:38   Kubica now sets the fastest lap of the Grand Prix
19:25:54   The lead is 2.4 to Button, who may have got the message from that...
19:25:43   Hamilton responds to Button's pace by setting the fastest lap of the race
19:24:42   So the Swiss driver is up to 9th place
19:24:35   Buemi takes Michael Schumacer at Turn 1, that's great stuff for Toro Rosso!
19:23:35   Hulkenberg pits from P14
19:23:31   Kubica pits from P6
19:23:26   Button is closing in on Hamilton for the lead; it's just 2.2 seconds now
19:21:17   They've just lapped Michael Schumacher, who is 8th
19:21:09   He's 3.1 ahead of Button, with Alonso right behind Jenson
19:21:00   Hamilton leads on Lap 58 of 70
19:19:54   He loses 13th to Liuzzi
19:19:49   Replays show Alguersuari going off across the grass at Turn 8
19:19:02   The Ferrari was held up behind Chandhok's Hispania as he lapped it
19:18:53   Replays show Button passing Alonso out of Turn 7
19:18:31   Button takes Alonso for P2!
19:18:27   Kubica, Rosberg, Schumacher, Buemi and Hulkenberg complete the top ten
19:17:34   Glock is out, he's stopped in the pits

19:17:16   Alonso is 2nd but Button is right behind him
19:17:11   Hamilton leads by 2.7 seconds
19:17:04   So things have calmed down, just a bit!
19:16:27   One of them was Sutil, and that's for P11
19:16:20   Massa takes two cars in one move at Turn 6
19:14:05   RETIREMENTS: Kobayashi (crash), Senna (pits), de la Rosa (engine), Trulli (suspected engine)
19:13:46   Hulkenberg in 10th is the first lapped car
19:13:37   CURRENT ORDER on Lap 53: Hamilton, Alonso, Button, Vettel, Webber, Kubica, Rosberg, Schumacher, Buemi, Hulkenberg

19:12:44   Alonso is second from Button

19:11:42   Buemi pits from P8, and Glock from P18
19:10:51   But Webber dives into the pits
19:10:45   ...he faints to the inside to distract Mark
19:10:38   Alonso attacks Webber for P2 as they head to the final chicane...
19:10:30   So Hamilton has a clear run to a second consecutive victory
19:09:46   Webber drops into the clutches of Alonso now
19:09:40   Hamilton leads on Lap 50 of 70
19:09:35   He's done it, on the inside!
19:09:32   Hamilton goes for the lead at Turn 1!
19:09:28   They're all coming through back markers
19:09:10   The top five are now glued together on Lap 49
19:08:45   Hamilton is right behind Webber for the lead now
19:07:42   "We are managing an issue, we are managing an issue," Horner replies
19:07:32   5th placed Vettel: "Seriously, how do you want me to pass if we're going slower and slower?"
19:06:25   And out goes Jarno Trulli, he's stopped at the pit entrance and is out of a third race in a row
