Hamilton leads McLaren 1-2 in first practice
28 May 2010

Lewis Hamilton topped the timesheets as practice began on Friday morning ahead of this weekend's Turkish Grand Prix. With McLaren team-mate Jenson Button second, Mercedes GP kept up the symmetry as Schumacher and Rosberg finished third and fourth after Adrian Sutil's Force India suffered a Turn 8 crash in the final three minutes.

Hamilton finished quickest after his ears were pierced in Los Angeles last week

It was a warm morning on the Asian side of the city where east meets west, although ambient temperatures in the high 20s were very much beaten by those of the track surface, which reached figures in the low 40s.

It was no surprise to the see the two Lotus cars leave the pits immediately as the green pit exit light illuminated at 10am local time, with Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen running new pillar-mounted rear wings as well as a selection of other new aerodynamic and mechanical parts this weekend.

Other notable changes are that Mercedes GP has reverted to its longer wheelbase, debuted in Barcelona but not used on the narrow streets of Monaco, and that both Red Bull Racing and Force India are using rear wing-stalling f-duct systems for the first time; however, in championship-leading Red Bull's case, only Mark Webber was running the device for the first 90-minute practice period of the day.

Hispania ran tester Yamamoto for the first time this season

Team-mate Vettel, who celebrates his 50th Formula 1 race this weekend, was on-track with a brand-new chassis - cheekily labelled 'Randy Mandy' by the German, keeping up with his car-naming tradition - after a crack was found in the monocoque previously used by the man who took pole in Istanbul last year.

With so little grip on offer, Hamilton's best effort of 1:28.653 was just under four seconds of Juan Pablo Montoya's race lap record of 2005, with several drivers having run wide at various points around the circuit as well - not least Turn 1.

After placing Christian Klien in the car at the Circuit de Catalunya, Hispania elected to run other reserve driver Sakon Yamamoto this morning although - despite the former Super Aguri driver suffering a loose gurney flap on his rear wing - it was team-mate Karun Chandhok with larger problems 40 minutes in, coasting from Turn 10 to the pit lane with a suspected electrical problem before rejoining the session in the late stages.

Ferrari - 9th and 13th in this session - celebrates its 800th F1 race this weekend
Pit-stop practices took place before the session and various system checks were conducted during it, although Adrian Sutil confirmed that drivers were not able to push as hard as possible in the final three minutes as yellow flags came out for his accident, which took place on the exit of the notorious Turn 8; the reason for the shunt, which saw caused the car's front wing and both front wheels to be detached after impacting with the tyre barriers, remains unknown at present.

Button on top but Red Bull in trouble
28 May 2010

Jenson Button's McLaren headed the timesheets in the second free practice session at Istanbul Park on Friday. Championship leader Mark Webber finished within a tenth of the top spot although both he and Red Bull Racing team-mate Sebastian Vettel suffered technical problems, with the Australian pulling off the circuit as a result.

It was a beautiful day for weather in Turkey on Friday, as ambient afternoon temperatures reached as high as 32°C (90°F) in the city which spans both Europe and Asia; at Istanbul Park, which is located on the Asian side, the track surface was up to 50°C (122°F) by the time the excitement began in the second 90-minute practice period.

Adrian Sutil was able to rejoin the action, despite having suffered a large accident on the exit of Turn 8 in the morning which took off both of the Force India's front wheels as well as its wing. Somewhat amazingly, mechanics were able to repair the damage on time to allow the German to wind up a respectable 11th fastest.

There were no such incidents in Practice 2 although the infamous corner did throw up its usual high number of dramatic moments; Kamui Kobayashi's were some of the most spectacular, not least his spin after missing the third apex just five minutes in before another moment later on in the session.

Adrian Sutil suffered a Turn 8 accident in the morning session

Vitaly Petrov also struggled to trouble the third of four apexes, as did Vitantonio Liuzzi (who spun and ran wide in separate moments), 3-time Istanbul winner Felipe Massa and Karun Chandhok.

Massa, who finished the day tenth quickest and nine tenths of a second off Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso, also joined Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton in running wide at Turn 1 as wind speeds of three and a half metres per second continued to catch out various members of the field.

Mark Webber may have run slightly off-line on the exit of Turn 10 although the Red Bull RB6 continued to demonstrate its phenomenal downforce and grip levels, expected to be on pole position again should reliability be on the team's side tomorrow.

Reliability is a worry for the Milton Keynes team, however, as it suffered more than its fair share at the start of the season; more gremlins crept in today, with Vettel having endured water pressure problems in the garage before Webber was the victim of an unsuspected and sudden Renault engine failure on the exit of Turn 2

Having intentionally rolled backwards on to a service road and out of harm's way, the Australian could be seen to furiously gesticulate to race marshals who, after some deliberation, placed a fire extinguisher under the car's right-front wheel in order to prevent it from rolling further.

At the sharp end, Button's best effort of 1:28.280 ensured that the 2009 winner finished fractionally under a tenth up on the halted Webber, with respective team-mates Vettel (who celebrates his 50th F1 race this weekend) and Hamilton third and fourth. Fernando Alonso leads the Ferrari charge from fifth, with the team celebrating its 800th Grand Prix, ahead of the two Mercedes as Nico Rosberg leads Michael Schumacher for the first time in the longer wheelbase version of the MGP W01.

The hour-long third practice in Turkey will begin at 11am local time on Saturday (BST +2)

Vettel on top in final practice
29 May 2010

Sebastian Vettel registered the fastest lap on Saturday morning at Istanbul Park. The Red Bull driver completed a trouble-free session although team-mate and championship leader Mark Webber suffered from problems with his throttle.
Saturday morning's one-hour free practice session started with low temperatures in Istanbul. The session saw a number of drivers face difficulties. Heikki Kovalainen was the first to run into a gearbox problem. The Lotus driver was out for his installation lap but got stuck in third gear. He managed to return to his pitbox though and his problems were soon solved.

Adrian Sutil though lost a lot more time. The German Force India driver ran into an hydraulic problem. Sutil lost the entire free practice session and will have to start this afternoon's qualifying session without any decent track time on the softer Bridgestone compound.

Next was Mark Webber. The Red Bull Racing driver missed a fair bit of time on track this morning as the championship leader ran into problems with his throttle. The team managed to fix his problems and saw him finish in fourth.

At Mercedes the team must be happy with the competitive lap times of Nico Rosberg; the German ended second in today's free practice session while team-mate Michael Schumacher ended seventh. At McLaren, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button ended the session third and eighth respectively.

Unstoppable Webber storms to Turkish pole
29 May 2010

Despite a late challenge from the McLaren of Lewis Hamilton, Mark Webber was able to hold onto Saturday's pole position ahead of the Turkish Grand Prix. Respective team-mates Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button share Row 2 although Fernando Alonso's Ferrari will start from 12th after making a Q2 mistake.
Air temperatures in the high 20s and track figures ten degrees higher confirmed a fitting day, weather-wise, for Formula 1 on Saturday when a number of drives delivered some sparkling performances and others did quite the opposite.

Q1 delivered no major surprises, with the sport's three new-for-2010 teams filling the back three rows of the grid; however, Jarno Trulli was able to out-qualify Lotus team-mate Heikki Kovalainen and Hispania driver Bruno Senna produced a highly respectable lap to edge ahead of Lucas di Grassi's Virgin Racing car.

The seventh driver to be eliminated was Italy's Vitantonio Liuzzi, who was unable to improve on his last two laps - not helped by running wide on his final attempt at the last corner. Considering the former Red Bull and Toro Rosso driver was the only team member to run with its new f-duct system - with team-mate Adrian Sutil having lost time to properly evaluate the device in practice - the pressure is mounting further onto Liuzzi's shoulders, with Scottish test driver Paul di Resta waiting in the wings.

A tough weekend looks in store for Williams, as both cars were eliminated in Q2 as they ran old specification front wings - with the latest versions having been destroyed in Barrichello and Hülkenberg's Monte-Carlo accidents a fortnight ago; the Brazilian-German duo start 15th and 17th, sandwiching Alguersuari's Toro Rosso and behind his team-mate, Sébastien Buemi.

Pedro de la Rosa will set off from 13th on Sunday although team-mate Kamui Kobayashi was able to make the top ten shootout after Fernando Alonso locked up his left-front wheel at Turn 12 whilst on his penultimate lap.

Having touched the white line at the edge of the circuit under braking, the former double World Champion was unable to improve on his final lap but denied that the moment was the reason for his downfall; eighth for team-mate Felipe Massa, a triple Istanbul winner, confirms a difficult day for the Scuderia as it attempts to celebrate its 800th Grand Prix weekend.

Knowing tenth was likely to be his best possible position - ahead of Sutil's 11th-placed Force India - Kobayashi elected to do only a single flying lap in Q3 but lost out on any chance to displace Vitaly Petrov's Renault by being out of shape at the final corner.

The Red Bull and McLaren cars were on top as the final runs began in the last two minutes. Webber was first of the quartet to cross the line, reducing his best effort to the eventual pole time of 1:26.295, with Hamilton able to set the best sector times in the first and third segments of the lap but losing out in the middle part.

Team-mates Vettel - taking part in his 50th Grand Prix this weekend but hindered by constantly locking front brakes - and Button both endured difficult last laps, not helped as yellow flags came out when Michael Schumacher lost his Mercedes in an uncharacteristic Turn 8 spin - as a result, both Vettel and Button elected to abandon their final runs.

The 7-time World Champion qualified fifth and ahead of team-mate Nico Rosberg, despite his spin which saw him end up in the gravel trap with a set of heavily worn tyres which must also be used for the start of tomorrow's race, unless special dispensation is granted by F1 governing body the FIA on safety grounds.

Both Renaults made the shootout, with Kubica and Petrov either side of Massa's Ferrari, although Alonso and Webber made the largest headlines on Saturday for two very different reasons. Webber's pole position is the fifth of his career, fourth of 2010 and third consecutive start in the best grid spot.

The 2010 Turkish Grand Prix will begin at 3pm local time on Sunday (BST +2).

Lap by Lap:

14:03:41   It's Red Bull on pole once again; 7 out of 7 in 2010 and now 4 out of 7 for Mark Webber
14:02:34   Kubica is 7th from Massa, Petrov and Kobayashi
14:02:26   Vettel and Button are next from Schumacher and Rosberg
14:02:19   It's 3 in a row and he's joined on Row 1 by Hamilton
14:02:11   Button it's Webber on pole once again, he's had the most in 2010 now
14:02:01   Michael is 5th
14:01:58   He's stuck in the gravel, that's why we had a yellow flag
14:01:50   And Schumacher's lost it and gone off at Turn 8
14:01:43   Hamilton set the best Sector 1 and 3 times but couldn't make it
14:01:20   Vettel pitted too
14:01:16   Button is 4th and pits
14:01:07   Rosberg goes sixth, he stays sixth
14:00:58   It looks great for Webber
14:00:55   ...he's 2nd, he doesn't beat Webber
14:00:47   Here comes Hamilton...
14:00:44   We have a yellow somewhere
14:00:41   YELLOW FLAG
14:00:39   He reduces the quickest time to 1:26.295
14:00:24   Webber approaches the line now
14:00:19   The current P1 time for Webber is 26.5
14:00:12   Vettel is not as quick in Sector 1
14:00:07   Hamilton beats that Sector 1 time now, can Hamilton do one over Webber?
13:59:55   Webber sets a blistering Sector 1 time
13:59:41   Cars can finish any hot lap which begins before the clock hits 0
13:59:32   30 SECONDS REMAINING
13:59:29   The quick guys are on their last flying laps now, can Red Bull be beaten to pole?
13:59:06   He was off-line through the final corner, so that's him done for the day
13:58:58   ...10th, so that's where he'll start
13:58:48   The Sauber goes...
13:58:45   Petrov is currently 9th, can Kobayashi beat that for now?
13:58:36   He's currently 10th and is only setting one lap time in this session
13:58:27   Kobayashi is the man on a flying lap at the moment
13:58:05   2 MINUTES REMAINING
13:58:01   All cars are now on-track
13:57:56   Webber, Massa and Petrov are on out-laps, joined now by Vettel and Hamilton
13:57:34   The tyre blankets come off Webber's car
13:56:39   Kobayashi has gone out while most cars are back in the pits; he'll do one flying lap
13:56:24   It's Webber on P1 for Red Bull ahead of Hamilton's McLaren, Vettel's Red Bull and Button's McLaren
13:56:05   4 MINUTES REMAINING
13:55:50   His engine is on now and he's now heading out
13:55:41   Kobayashi has clearly decided only to go out once as he probably knows it's likely that he won't be much higher than 9th
13:55:21   Schumacher is currently ahead of team-mate Rosberg
13:55:14   McLaren are really looking threatening for a front row slot
13:55:06   Which one of them, if any, will it be today
13:54:59   Vettel was on pole in Bahrain, Australia and China; Webber was in Malaysia, Spain and Monaco
13:54:46   Webber is wide at Turn 14, the final corner, and it's currently on P1!
13:54:37   It's Hamilton, Vettel, Button, Schumacher, Rosberg
13:54:29   Vettel goes 2nd at the moment, 2 tenths off Hamilton
13:54:21   Vettel enters the last corner, but was slightly wide at Turn 12
13:54:11   Button's McLaren goes 2nd, Schumacher is 3rd
13:54:04   Remember, Red Bull are yet to be beaten to pole in 2010
13:53:56   So it's Hamilton, Rosberg, Kubica early doors in Q3
13:53:48   Rosberg's Mercedes slots into 2nd
13:53:43   Hamilton beats it now on 1:26.542
13:53:34   Kubica is first to set a lap time: 1:27.039
13:52:10   Only Kobayashi is yet to go out
13:52:05   8 MINUTES REMAINING
13:52:01   So Massa is the only Ferrari representative on a weekend which is important for him; how far up can be be?
13:50:22   Kubica is first out
13:50:18   Q3 BEGINS
13:50:16   GREEN LIGHT

13:50:14   CONTESTING Q3: Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes, Renault, Massa and Kobayashi
13:46:38   ESTABLISHED STARTING GRID AFTER Q2 (provisional): 11) Sutil 12) Alonso 13) de la Rosa 14) Buemi 15) Barrichello 16) Alguersuari 17) Hulkenberg 18) Liuzzi 19) Trulli 20) Kovalainen 21) Glock 22) Senna 23) di Grassi 24) Chandhok
13:45:41   We now have an 8-minute break until Q3 begins
13:45:34   This is now two races in a row in which Alonso has failed to contest the top ten shootout
13:44:59   It all started when he got crossed up under braking for Turn 12 on his previous flying lap, he touched the outside white line
13:44:15   CONTESTING Q3: Vettel, Webber, Hamilton, Rosberg, Massa, Button, Petrov, Kubica, Kobayashi, Schumacher
13:43:53   ELIMINATED FROM Q2: Sutil, Alonso, de la Rosa, Buemi, Barrichello, Alguersuari, Hulkenberg
13:43:11   Kobayashi's Sauber is in the top ten, in 9th!
13:43:02   Schumacher is 10th and right on the bubble but nobody is threatening his lap
13:42:50   Vettel goes P1 from Webber, Hamilton and Rosberg
13:42:32   That is an incredible surprise
13:42:25   He's out, Fernando Alonso's Ferrari is out of qualifying in Q2!
13:42:16   ...Alonso moves up to 12!
13:42:07   He's currently 12th...
13:42:03   Alonso is doing enough after Sector 2, where will he go
13:41:53   Vettel sets the best Sector 1 so far
13:41:48   Alonso sets a person best in Sector 1
13:41:41   30 SECONDS REMAINING
13:41:37   That yellow must have been a small off for somebody
13:41:29   ALL CLEAR
13:41:26   YELLOW FLAG
13:41:24   Webber goes P1 from Vettel, Hamilton, Massa, Kubica, Button, Schumacher and Petrov

13:37:53   The Saubers have pitted
13:37:46   Alonso and Rosberg are in the drop zone at the moment, so they won't be relaxed in these 5 minutes
13:37:07   5 MINUTES REMAINING
13:36:51   Only the two Saubers are on-track now, they left the pits last
13:36:26   How many of the top cars will feel they have to go back out and who will be eliminated?
13:36:11   We've got 6 minutes of Q2 still to go
13:35:51   de la Rosa messed up his last lap, locking up at Turn 12
13:35:37   Kobayashi moves the Sauber to 9th at the moment
13:35:29   They are likely to be the two Williams, Sauber and Toro Rosso cars plus one other
13:35:17   7 drives will drop out in Q2, filling grid slots 11 to 17
13:35:01   CURRENT DROP ZONE: Rosberg, Buemi, Alguersuari, Barrichello, Hulkenberg, de la Rosa, Kobayashi
13:34:20   Petrov's first lap puts him 5th
13:34:15   So it's very close at the top at the moment, with Vettel ahead of Hamilton, Webber and Button
13:34:03   Vettel goes P1 for Red Bull, 88 thousandths up on Hamilton
13:33:51   Kubica pits, he'll be back out of course
13:33:36   Unlike the last three race weekends, Petrov is yet to have an accident here
13:33:21   Petrov is on his first lap now and he could well be in the top ten shootout, judging by his Q1 pace
13:33:06   It's Hamilton, Webber, Vettel, Kubica, Schumacher, Massa, Button, Sutil, Alonso and Buemi
13:32:20   The two tyre compounds here, by the way, are Bridgestone's Hard and Soft types
13:32:04   10 MINUTES REMAINING
13:31:53   We're almost a third of the way through Q2 now
13:31:45   Webber goes 2nd, just 67 thousandths down
13:31:33   Hamilton goes P1 for McLaren: 1:27.013
13:31:25   Petrov is on-track, leaving only the Saubers in the pit lane
13:31:06   Schumacher's Mercedes slots into third
13:31:00   Vettel has just gone P1 for Red Bull
13:30:51   Schumacher is heading for the final complex of corners
13:30:43   Only Petrov and the two Saubers are yet to leave the pits
13:30:34   Button goes P2 on a 27.5
13:30:27   ...the Pole sets the first time of Q2: 1:27.487
13:30:15   No lap times have yet been yet but Kubica will soon ensure that one is...
13:30:02   Interestingly, some new rear wing endplates have arrived for Webber's car shortly before qualifying began
13:28:54   7 cars are out on-track now
13:28:23   Kubica's Renault is the first car out, joined but Vettel and Button
13:27:23   So, it's go for 15 minutes of Q2 and this could be interesting
13:27:10   Q2 BEGINS
13:27:07   GREEN LIGHT

13:26:58   All credit should go to Sutil, too; he crashed yesterday, lost time in practice and then lost more this morning due to hydraulics problems; he ended up 13th
13:26:01   ELIMINATED FROM Q1: Liuzzi, Trulli, Kovalainen, Glock, Senna, di Grassi, Chandhok
13:25:39   Interestingly, Liuzzi was the only Force India using their f-duct, as we mentioned earlier on
13:22:53   We now have a 7-minute break until the 15-minute Q2 begins, which will see grid slots 11 to 17 filled
13:22:31   Q1 ORDER, 1-18: Vettel, Webber, Button, Petrov, Rosberg, Hamilton, Schumacher, Kubica, Alonso, Sutil, Massa, de la Rosa, Kobayashi, Hulkenberg, Barrichello, Alguersuari, Buemi
13:21:52   Those cars fill grid spots 18 to 24; we have Liuzzi out, Trulli quicker of the Lotuses and Senna's HRT ahead of di Grassi's Virgin
13:21:34   ELIMINATED FROM Q1: Liuzzi, Trulli, Kovalainen, Glock, Senna, di Grassi, Chandhok
13:21:11   So, a fairly non-dramatic Q1
13:20:44   So Liuzzi is eliminated after being out of shape on the exit of Turn 14
13:20:34   No, it is not
13:20:31   Is it enough, here he comes...
13:20:27   Liuzzi has done a personal best in Sector 2
13:19:51   Petrov has pitted, so the top ten are all in the pits
13:19:21   1 MINUTE REMAINING
13:19:19   He's just failed and has now started his last lap
13:19:11   The big question is, can Liuzzi move himself out of the drop zone?
13:18:56   The team has split with car maker Dallara since the last race, so is now doing all of its own work
13:18:30   Senna's car is all over the place in Turn 8, not riding the bumps at all well
13:18:08   2 MINUTES REMAINING IN Q1
13:17:59   CURRENT DROP ZONE: Liuzzi, Trulli, Kovalainen, Glock, Senna, Chandhok and di Grassi
13:17:45   Sutil is currently 11th from de la Rosa, Kobayashi, Hulkenberg, Buemi, Alguersuari and Barrichello
13:17:29   ...the Russian improves to P4 now
13:17:24   The only top ten man on-track now is Petrov...
13:17:15   CURRENT TOP 10: Vettel, Webber, Button, Rosberg, Hamilton, Schumacher, Kubica, Alonso, Massa, Petrov
13:16:56   Vettel's current P1 time is half a second quicker than the leading non-Red Bull, which is Button in third
13:16:36   CURRENT DROP ZONE: Liuzzi, Trulli, Kovalainen, Glock, Senna, di Grassi, Chandhok
13:16:21   In Monaco, it was Alonso who was out in Q1 after crashing in final practice
13:16:12   In Spain, Barrichello's Williams was 18th
13:15:35   It is highly likely to be the three new teams' cars plus one other
13:15:19   Now we must start watching the drop zone, which is positions 18 to 24 in this phase
13:15:07   5 MINUTES REMAINING
13:14:55   Team-mate Webber took the top grid spot in Malaysia, Spain and Monaco
13:14:44   Correction: Vettel was on pole in Bahrain, Australia and China
13:13:42   He took pole in Bahrain, Malaysia and China
13:13:22   So Vettel is currently fastest in all sectors of this lap
13:13:06   So Vettel is now P1 in a Red Bull 1-2, with a best lap of 1:27.067
13:12:53   ...Vettel runs slightly wide at the last corner but goes 4 tenths up on Webber
13:12:41   The German exits the final corner...
13:12:36   Vettel has set the best first and second sectors so far
13:12:29   Not for long: Webber beats it on 1:27.500
13:12:21   Button is still P1 on 1:27.555
13:12:01   Rosberg moves back ahead of Hamilton for 2nd
13:11:55   CURRENT ORDER: Button, Hamilton, Vettel, Rosberg, Alonso, Webber, Schumacher, Massa, Kubica, Petrov
13:11:37   Vettel's middle sector was the best so far
13:11:29   ...He doesn't, it's only enough for third at the moment
13:11:15   Vettel is at the last corner, possibly about to go P1...
13:11:09   9 MINUTES REMAINING
13:10:47   Replays show Liuzzi losing it under braking for Turn 12, going sideways and sliding across the apex sideways
13:10:27   Hamilton moves to 2nd, replacing Rosberg
13:10:06   ALL CLEAR
13:09:49   Off goes Liuzzi at Turn 12 but he rejoins
13:09:43   YELLOW FLAG
13:09:37   Schumacher has just moved to 5th
13:09:31   CURRENT TOP TEN: Button, Rosberg, Hamilton, Alonso, Schumacher, Massa, Sutil, Petrov, Hulkenberg, Buemi
13:09:10   Rosberg goes 2nd on his first lap of the day; the same position in which he finished final practice this morning
13:08:55   Kovalainen is the only man in the pits now
13:08:48   Both Williams are running with older spec front wings here after the newer versions were smashed up in Monaco last time out
13:08:32   CURRENT TOP 10: Button, Hamilton, Alonso, Massa, Petrov, Sutil, Buemi, Liuzzi, Hulkenberg, Barrichello
13:08:13   Both Red Bulls are now out on-track
13:08:07   Chandhok has been off the road but rejoins without problems
13:07:39   Interestingly, the Red Bulls are still yet to go out
13:07:32   Liuzzi, Hulkenberg, Barrichello and Trulli are currently in the top ten
13:07:23   It's two McLarens from two Ferraris, Petrov's Renault and Sutil's Force India
13:07:09   ...the 2008 Champion goes 2nd, just off his team-mate
13:07:01   Hamilton is coming through the last corner now...
13:06:56   So it's Button, Alonso, Massa, Petrov and Sutil
13:06:50   ...and goes P1 on 1:27.780
13:06:41   Button crosses the line...
13:06:37   Massa makes it a provisional Ferrari 1-2 in Q1
13:06:17   Petrov's Renault slots into 2nd place
13:06:01   That's 2.3 up on Sutil for the moment
13:05:51   Alonso's Ferrari goes P1 on 1:28.172
13:05:35   Senna goes 5th for HRT
13:05:27   It's still Sutil, Kovalainen, Trulli, Glock but of course more laps are coming now[/b]
13:05:12   In terms of temperatures, the air is at 26°C and the track at 38 °C at the moment
13:04:38   Sutil goes P1 on 1:30.433
13:04:31   CURRENT ORDER: Trulli, Kovalainen, Glock
13:04:22   di Grassi has returned to the pits but we have 14 cars on-track now, including both Ferraris and McLarens
13:03:50   Trulli goes P1 on 1:31.722
13:03:01   Force India also have, but only Liuzzi is using it because he's had more practice time
13:02:47   Red Bull have trialled an f-duct this weekend but they're not using it in qualifying
13:02:30   Virgin were a very long way off Lotus in Practice 1, but they were in Monaco and then were only 3 tenths off in qualifying
13:02:05   Glock is the first man to start a flying lap
13:01:59   Sutil is on-track too now; he had a crash at Turn 8 yesterday
13:01:46   Both Red Bulls have had problems this weekend, though; it was water pressure for Vettel yesterday, engine for Webber yesterday and then hydraulics for Webber this morning
13:01:18   We have 2 milestones this weekend; Ferrari celebrates its 800th race and Vettel celebrates his 50th race
13:00:48   The two Lotus and Virgin cars go straight out onto track
13:00:36   This phase will see 7 cars drop out, filling grid slots 18 to 24
13:00:20   The 20-minute Q1 begins
13:00:15   GREEN LIGHT
12:58:51   We've had Hamilton, Button and Vettel on P1 in the three practice sessions but can Red Bull keep up their 2010 pole record today?
12:58:27   Good afternoon from Istanbul Park and welcome to qualifying for the 2010 Turkish Grand Prix

Downcast Webber: Seb turned pretty quick to the right...
30 May 2010

All onlookers were stunned to see the leading Red Bull Racing drivers come together in Sunday's Turkish Grand Prix. With Mark Webber leading from pole position, the Australian's car was hit under braking for Turn 12 as team-mate Sebastian Vettel challenged on the inside.
With Webber having defended the lead since the start from eventual winner Lewis Hamilton, the Australian found his team-mate behind him after the 2008 Champion encountered pit-stop problems.

With Vettel on the inside of Turn 12 on Lap 41, the German's right-front wheel contacted with Webber's left-rear.

"Seb had a big top speed advantage went down the inside, side-by-side and he turned right pretty quick and there was contact," recalled Webber, who went on to finish third as Vettel retired on the spot. "It happened pretty fast…a shame for team and not an ideal day.

"Obviously we didn't want to come into contact with each other but it can happen sometimes, not ideal.

When asked if he felt Vettel was purely responsible, Webber replied:

"There was a long way to go in the race, it wasn't a guaranteed victory but it was an interesting few metres on the track and wasn't the result we wanted…"

Vettel: I felt I was able to go quicker
30 May 2010

A gloomy Sebastian Vettel was in no mood to give interviews in the immediate aftermath of his collision with team-mate Mark Webber on Sunday although the German did speak to reporters just minutes later, feeling that he was able to travel quicker than Mark Webber.
"Well I mean I'm not very happy now, obviously, after something like this happening but, yeah, I mean we were all pretty much same conditions - same speed, same pace," Red Bull driver Vettel explained to dozens of reporters in the Istanbul paddock.

"I felt I was able to go quicker and came close on the last two or three laps before incident. I dived down the inside and all of a sudden I lost the car - on the TV you can see we touched."

When asked who he felt was responsible for the Turn 12 embarrassment, Vettel replied:

"Well I'm not the kind of guy who gives one…one that pushes the fault to one guy; we are a team at the end of the day we have to respect that fact.

"Unfortunately my race is over - it was important points for the team, for myself, it's not the best case."

Horner: Neither driver gave room
30 May 2010

Christian Horner was understandably an upset man after leading drivers Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel collided and lost any chance of victory in Sunday's Turkish Grand Prix. The Turn 12 collision on Lap 41 allowed McLaren to enjoy a 1-2, with Red Bull picking up 15 points as opposed to 43.
With Webber having only lost his lead briefly during pit-stops, the pole man came under attack from Vettel as the duo approached the twelfth corner at Istanbul Park, with the touch seeing Vettel spin violently out of the race and narrowly avoid more contact with his team-mate in the run-off zone.

"From a team perspective, I'm really disappointed because the team had done everything right," Team Principal Horner told the BBC. "We'd out-strategied the McLarens, who were strong today.

"To see both cars touch each other was really disappointing. I've spoken to Sebastian; he got a run and they should never had been where they were - it's really disappointing for the team and it's cost us a lot of points. We handed 43 points, on a plate, to McLaren and our team really deserved to win this race. We need to sit down, go through it all and come back stronger…

"…what we always ask is that the drivers give each other room and today neither yielded - the result is that the team loses a lot of points, Mark loses a lot of points and Sebastian loses a lot of points - the net result is everybody loses. We saw with Jenson (Button) and Lewis (Hamilton) that they raced each other - they gave each other space and that's what we ask."

McLaren 1-2 in Turkey as Red Bulls collide
30 May 2010

Lewis Hamilton has clinched his first win of the 2010 season after a dramatic Turkish Grand Prix at Istanbul Park. The McLaren driver, who challenged for the lead all race long, was promoted to the top spot when Red Bull drivers Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel sensationally collided at Turn 12.
It was a scintillating day in Turkey on Sunday as Formula 1 was given what was, without doubt, the best Grand Prix at Istanbul Park since the venue joined the calendar in 2005. Although the crowd was not vast, those who did turn up were able to enjoy air temperatures in the high twenties as a threat of rain translated to no more than several drops.

There were worries at Red Bull prior to the race as both cars' roll bars were changed following problem, particularly for Vettel, in qualifying. At Virgin Racing, Lucas di Grassi was forced to start from the pit lane following rapid repairs for an oil leak which was discovered shortly before the 3pm start.

A clear start for pole man Webber allowed the Australian to retain his lead as Vettel - in his 50th F1 race - stole second from Hamilton around the outside of Turn 1; however, the McLaren driver immediately snatched the position back after running side-by-side with the German through the third and fourth corners.

Behind, 7-time World Champion Michael Schumacher took fourth away from Jenson Button although the current title holder repassed the Mercedes at Turn 12 at the end of the lap; the latter held fifth for the majority of the race, dropping some 25 seconds off the leading quarter who stayed glued together.

After making a mistake in qualifying on Saturday, Fernando Alonso lost a place to compatriot Pedro de la Rosa off the start but was able to retake the Sauber on Lap 2, remaining in twelfth before the pit-stops.

Having been stuck behind Kamui Kobayashi's Sauber, which scored a respectable point after holding off de la Rosa and Jaime Alguersuari in the late stages, Alonso later seized his finishing place of eighth from Vitaly Petrov's Renault on Lap 55, passing on the outside of Turn 3 as contact punctured the Renault's right-front tyre.

At the front, Hamilton continued to pile the pressure on Webber, attempting several exciting passing manoeuvres at Turns 1 and 12 in the opening laps, although the Englishman crucially fell back behind Vettel after suffering a left-rear wheel problem during his stop.

Button led briefly, setting fastest laps in the interim, although he rejoined fourth as the top four ran in the same shot until the infamous Lap 41 moment.

With rain having already been a threat for 20 laps, the first spots began to appear on camera lenses as Vettel enjoyed a strong run out of Turn 10, challenging Webber on the outside of 11. However, the German's car began to move fractionally right in the braking zone, going sideways and spearing into the side of Webber before heading into retirement via a triple spin, just missing Webber again as the Australian took to the outside and across the run-off area in front of his out-of-control team-mate.

Meantime, Hamilton dived through into the lead, followed by Button, as Webber rejoined third and just over seven seconds ahead of Schumacher following a precautionary pit-stop.

The Red Bull coming together is likely to run on for several days, not least as Vettel was seen making 'crazy' gestures with his finger whilst heading back to the paddock on foot, furiously shunning reporters before sharing his views minutes later.

Just seven laps after the crash, the McLarens engaged in their own tussle as Button brilliantly took the lead from Hamilton on the outside of Turn 12, running wide into 13 but confirming the top spot on the inside of the final corner; off-line again, however, Hamilton was able to grab the lead back at Turn 1 as the pair came into contact. With several heartbeats missed in the pit lane, the drivers then held position until the end of the 58-lap race, crossing the finish line two and a half seconds apart.

With a dejected Webber on the podium, Schumacher equalled his 2010 best result of fourth, ahead of team-mate Nico Rosberg, Robert Kubica's Renault and the two Ferraris - with Alonso managing to fight from 12th to an ultimate eighth in the team's 800th Grand Prix.

Adrian Sutil came home ninth for Force India, ahead of the content Kobayashi, although both the Lotus and Hispania teams were saddened to experience double retirements - on the same lap, in the former's case - in a race when all cars lasted until at least the halfway point.

McLaren's third win, second 1-2 result of the season - and Hamilton's first race victory since Singapore last year - sees McLaren retake the advantage in the Constructors' Championship in a week which marks 40 years since the death of team founder Bruce McLaren.

Round 8 of F1 2010 will see the fraternity return to Canada for the first time since 2008; Practice 1 can be followed  beginning at 10 local time on Friday 11 June (BST -5)

15:17:11   Hamilton retakes it at Turn 1, this is stunning!
15:16:59   And Button leads, Button leads!
15:16:53   The McLarens are side-by-side!
15:16:22   There is a massive, massive, media gaggle around Sebastian Vettel
15:13:41   And there is still definitely rain on the cameras here
15:13:35   Buemi has pitted from 16th
15:12:38   The reaction from Christian Horner and Adrian Newey was also of great anger, of course
15:11:38   Vettel is not being interviewed, he's in fact angry if anybody tries to approach him
15:11:03   Schumacher is just 7.4 seconds behind Webber
15:10:27   Webber is third, after pitting again
15:10:22   He leads Button by 1 second
15:10:18   We have a McLaren 1-2, Lewis Hamilton won't believe his eyes
15:10:10   LAP 44 of 58
15:10:07   We saw Vettel making a 'mad' gesture with his finger next to his head, by the way...
15:08:33   He rejoins but keeps third
15:08:30   Webber pits from 3rd place
15:07:37   Vettel spun three times across Webber, forced Webber onto the run-off area and then just missed Mark again
15:07:15   Vettel's right-rear hit Webber's left-front
15:07:08   He was on the inside and moved across on Webber
15:06:50   Replays show Vettel attacking on the inside of Turn 12
15:05:29   Webber is still going in third
15:05:23   Sebastian Vettel is out of the race on the spot at Turn 12
15:05:16   We have a McLaren 1-2 in Turkey
15:04:53   YELLOW FLAG
15:04:50   Incredible, they've come together coming into Turn 12
15:04:44   The Red Bulls collide!
15:04:40   There's definate spots of rain
15:03:50   He also confirms that Kovalainen's problem was the power steering
15:03:42   'Double Hydraulic failure on both cars, unbelievable. So disapointing as was our best race,' says Mike Gascoyne says via Twitter
15:02:11   Hulkenberg pits from 17th place
15:02:03   *Alonso
15:02:00   "Very, very good pressure on Petrov; he won't keep you for long, he won't keep you for long," Andrea Stella tells Fernando Alosno
15:01:39   Vettel is half a second behind Vettel and Button a further 1.3 back
15:01:29   Webber leads Vettel by 6 tenths of a second
15:01:22   We're on Lap 38 of 58 in Istanbul
15:01:12   He's right in the Renault's wheel tracks into Turn 1 but all to no avail
15:01:02   Alonso is attacking Petrov, still, for 9th
15:00:38   FASTEST LAP: Sebastian Vettel on Lap 37: 1:30.181
14:59:36   Lotus have explained that it's hydraulics problems which affected both cars, on the same lap too
14:58:57   Kovalainen is out too, he's climbed out of his car in the garage so both Lotuses are out of this race on the same lap
14:58:42   Trulli's car has been cleared by the marshals
14:58:35   ALL CLEAR
14:57:50   It looks like double trouble for Lotus; Kovalainen is in the garage now
14:57:22   di Grassi pits from 22nd place
14:57:18   The yellows come out for Trulli; the car is on the grass but its right two wheels are on the white line, so he's by the side of the track
14:56:57   YELLOW FLAG
14:56:24   Team-mate Kovalainen pits from 19th
14:56:19   Trulli has pulled off to the side of the track; the Lotus is the first retirement
14:56:08   Remember, he and Buemi pitted at the end of Lap 1
14:55:58   They're coming up to Hulkenberg, the next car to be lapped and in 17th
14:55:46   The leaders begin Lap 35 of 58
14:55:36   ...and we're over halfway through
14:55:29   We still have all cars running, too
14:55:12   Hamilton suffers from oversteer on the exit of Turn 7, and loses a bit of time behind Vettel
14:54:50   Glock pits from 21st place
14:54:45   2.7 seconds cover those four
14:54:40   It's Webber, Vettel, Hamilton and Button
14:54:34   The leaders, be it 2 or 3 or 4 of them, have been jammed together since the start
14:54:20   Hamilton really closes up on Vettel for 2nd at Turn 14, the last corner
14:53:28   Button is 1.6 seconds behind Hamilton
14:53:18   Webber leads Vettel by 8 tenths, Hamilton a further half second behind
14:53:03   LAP 33 of 58
14:52:37   We still have no rain, by the way, but we'll keep you updated
14:52:26   FASTEST LAP: Jenson Button on Lap 31: 1:30.469
14:51:16   Buemi passes Truli for 19th at Turn 12 now
14:50:50   Senna takes di Grassi on the run to Turn 12, up to 22nd and that's Hispania passed Virgin Racing, great driving
14:50:28   Barrichello has taken Hulkenberg at Turn 12, 16th place
14:49:43   Trulli has gone a lap down now in 19th
14:49:31   Ferrari are very much on Mercedes' and Renault's pace now
14:49:20   6th to 10th are covered by 3 seconds: Rosberg, Kubica, Massa, Petrov and Alonso
14:48:45   Kubica is attacking Rosberg for 6th on the run to Turn 1
14:48:05   We still can't see any rain falling anywhere...
14:47:06   We're almost halfway through the race now, this is Lap 29 of 58
14:46:44   There is absolutely no respite at the front and hasn't been all race long
14:45:45   So Senna is now down to 23rd after his great start saw him rise to 19th
14:45:34   We still have all cars running and 5 are one lap down; Buemi, Glock, di Grassi, Senna and Chandhok
14:45:14   Trulli is 19th and the last car not to be lapped
14:45:08   Kobayashi is 11th from Sutil, de la Rosa, Alguersuari, Liuzzi, Hulkenberg, Barrichello and Kovalainen
14:44:52   Alonso is only tenth at the moment, heading for only 1 point
14:44:44   Kubica, Massa, Petrov are together for 7th, 8th and 9th
14:44:33   Rosberg is on his own, more or less, in sixth
14:44:26   Schumacher is 24 seconds behind them in fifth
14:44:20   The Lap 27 order is Webber, Vettel, Hamilton and Button together at the front
14:44:08   Nicole, Lewis Hamilton's Pussycat Doll girlfriend, looks pretty excited about this one in the McLaren garage
14:43:47   McLaren know that they can take advantage; their two wins so far this year have both been helped by rain
14:43:24   At the moment the rain can only really be bad for Red Bull, a spanner in the works
14:43:12   Christian Horner's foot is tapping on the Red Bull pit wall...
14:42:48   "That doesn't mean anything to me; is that Slicks or Intermediates," Michael replies
14:42:35   "Looking at the radar, it doesn't look too heavy, maybe 2 or 3 millimetres of rain," Schumacher is told
14:41:34   Webber's last lap was the fastest of the race so far
14:41:08   Schumacher is a huge 22 seconds further back
14:41:03   Button is just 1 seconds behind Hamilton now
14:40:56   Hamilton is 3rd, .5 behind Vettel
14:40:51   Webber leads Vettel by 1.1 seconds
14:40:36   LAP 25 of 58 begins now
14:40:28   That quarter of an hour could be a dramatic one...
14:39:35   Screens are showing that rain is coming very soon, set to be here for around 15 minutes
14:38:23   Chandhok pits from 24th; we still have all cars running here
14:37:18   The leaders are lapping di Grassi but rain is due is 8 minutes' time!
14:37:01   11th is Kobayahsi, behind Alonso since the stops, from Sutil, de la Rosa and Alguersuari
14:36:43   CURRENT ORDER on LAP 22: Webber, Vettel, Hamilton, Button, Schumacher, Rosberg, Kubica, Massa, Petrov, Alonso
14:36:23   Senna's HRT pits from 21st place
14:35:53   This is incredible, we've heard nothing of rain but there is indeed a black cloud heading this way...
14:35:21   Now, to add another element to this race, could rain come from nowhere?
14:35:10   Button is 1.5 seconds further back
14:35:01   Hamilton, currently fastest on the track, is half a second behind in third
14:34:51   Webber leads the Turkish Grand Prix by 8 tenths of a second from Vettel
14:34:40   LAP 21 of 58
14:34:36   So Hulkenberg is passed Kovalainen but can we see passes at the front?
14:33:46   Heikki attacks into Turn 12, nice stuff, but not through
14:33:38   Hulkenberg continues his recovery, past Kovalainen at Turn 9 for 17th
14:33:23   FASTEST LAP: Mark Webber on Lap 19: 1:31.499
14:31:40   That allows Webber to pull away slightly
14:31:24   He's not done it, but he's right there
14:31:18   Hamilton's around the outside of Vettel into Turn 12!
14:30:50   "We can still do this if we're sensible with our tyres," Hamilton is told via radio
14:30:23   The top four are all in the same shot, though, so it's great to see!
14:30:09   ...he's out in fourth, as expected
14:30:00   He's coming out, here comes the other three...
14:29:44   Button stops in his box
14:29:41   So we're going to have a Red Bull 1-2 from Hamilton
14:29:35   He's 15 seconds ahead of Webber, Vettel and Hamilton
14:29:10   Button, the leader, is pitting this lap
14:29:06   Lap 17 of 58
14:28:25   Vettel sets the fastest lap now
14:28:18   Button is leading and sets another fastest lap
14:28:12   So Webber is now under attack from Vettel and Hamilton
14:28:04   So Hamilton had a left-rear pit-stop problem
14:27:25   And Hamilton has lost a place to Vettel
14:27:01   Rosberg pits from 4th place
14:26:57   Button sets a fastest lap as he takes the lead
14:26:50   Webber rejoins ahead and it wasn't a great stop for Hamilton
14:26:34   Webber and Hamilton both pit, from 1st and 2nd!
14:26:03   Button is now flying as he knows he can beat Vettel to third
14:25:48   Alguersuari pits from what was 7th
14:25:39   Button now goes up to 3rd, can he leapfrog Vettel?
14:25:21   Schumacher is in too, from 5th
14:25:07   Vettel pits from 3rd place
14:25:04   Hamilton runs slightly wide coming out of Turn 10 so he's not close enough to Webber at Turn 12 this time
14:24:19   Liuzzi's in from 10th too
14:24:16   They rejoin in the same order
14:24:11   Kubica and Massa pit from 7th and 8th
14:23:24   Hamilton is so, so close to Webber under braking for Turn 12 but it's not quite enough yet
14:22:21   de la Rosa pits from 11th
14:22:18   Petrov and Sutil pit from 9th and 10th
14:22:11   These McLarens are rapid here today
14:22:02   Button sets the fastest lap now
14:21:59   Webber sets a fastest lap, Hamilton beats it
14:21:52   Lewis faints to the inside but plays it safe and stays behind, this is a great battle and has been all race
14:21:35   Hamilton is right with Webber for the lead, down to Turn 12
14:21:22   We think he's jumped Kobayashi
14:21:16   He's coming out now and he's looking in the mirrors
14:21:03   So Alonso had only one lap to do after Kobayashi pitted; can he rejoin ahead?
14:20:41   We have the Ferrari team ready; Alonso is in
14:20:33   FASTEST LAP: Sebastian Vettel on Lap 11: 1:32.403
14:20:23   Alonso is now up to 11th, then, and bottled up behind Sutil
14:20:12   So they were the first regular stops
14:19:30   Barrichello pits too, from 16th
14:19:23   11th placed Kobayashi pits at the end of Lap 10
14:19:11   Schumacher is now a large 9 seconds behind Button
14:18:59   FASTEST LAP: Lewis Hamilton on Lap 10: 1:32.422
14:18:47   Vettel is now 2 seconds further back, with Button 1.2 in arrears to him
14:18:33   There's been no more than that between them since the start
14:18:24   Webber leads Hamilton by just half a second
14:18:15   This is Lap 10 of the 2010 Turkish Grand Prix
14:17:41   FASTEST LAP: Mark Webber on Lap 9: 1:32.764
14:17:05   Hulkenberg takes Senna for 19th now, the German had to pit on Lap 1 with Buemi, who is still last
14:16:51   So Alonso is still where he started
14:16:45   Sutil is 10th and has now been caught by Kobayashi and Alonso, who lost a place to de la Rosa on the opening lap before retaking it
14:16:05   Rosberg is sixth and Kubica, Massa and Petrov are right behind him
14:15:51   Vettel is still third still from Button, who was passed by Schumacher on Lap 1 but then retook the position
14:15:30   If you're just joining us, Webber still leads from pole but Hamilton remains right behind him as Lap 9 begins
14:15:10   So, things have calmed down now after a dramatic first lap in Turkey
14:14:06   Hamilton is still right behind Webber at the start
14:13:44   1 second behind Sutil is Kobayashi, fighting off Alonso still
14:13:34   Behind Rosberg are Kubica, Massa, Petrov and Sutil all right behind
14:13:23   5th placed Schumacher, who passed Button at the start then lost 4th again, has Rosberg 1.5 seconds behind
14:12:58   CURRENT ORDER: Webber, Hamilton, Vettel, Button, Schumacher, Rosberg, Kubca, Massa, Petrov and Sutil
14:12:41   LAP 7
14:12:39   Webber is the fastest that lap
14:12:35   Webber and Hamilton's cars show just how bumpy the Turn 12 braking zone is
14:12:19   Di Grassi is 23rd after starting from the pit lane
14:12:08   Hulkenberg is recovering after his pit-stop, he's past Chandhok now
14:11:39   Hamilton has just set another fastest lap, now .4 behind Webber
14:11:26   So Alonso is currently out of the points and is where he started, 12th
14:10:44   Alonso is leading Spanish compatriots de la Rosa and Alguersuari in 12th, 13th and 14th
14:10:27   Button is another 1.5 behind with Schumacher 3.3 behind him
14:10:14   Vettel is a further 1.3 seconds back
14:10:08   Webber is leading Hamilton by half a second, it's very close!
14:09:59   Webber set the Fastest Lap on Lap 3, Hamilton on Lap 4 and now Vettel on Lap 5
14:09:23   Replays from Lap 1 show Massa taking momentarily to the grass to avoid Kubica
14:09:05   19th is Senna, a great start, from Glock, Chandhok, di Grassi and Hulkenberg who, like Buemi, has pitted
14:08:41   11th is Kobayashi from Alonso, de la Rosa, Alguersuari, Liuzzi, Barrichello, Trulli and Kovalainen
14:08:27   ORDER AT START OF LAP 4: Webber, Hamilton, Vettel, Button, Schumacher, Rosberg, Kubica, Massa, Petrov, Sutil
14:08:02   Hamilton is right with Webber for the lead, just 3 tenths between them!
14:07:37   He's passed compatriot Pedro de la Rosa
14:07:27   Kobayashi is 11th and Alonso's up to 12th now
14:07:02   Kubica is 7th from triple Istanbul winner Massa, Petrov and Sutil
14:06:52   Vettel is a further second back from Button and the two Mercedes, led by Schumacher
14:06:41   Webber leads Lewis Hamilton's Mclaren by 7 tenths of a second
14:06:31   LAP 3
14:05:58   Buemi's Toro Rosso has also pitted
14:05:17   Hulkenberg's Williams has pitted at the end of Lap 1
14:05:11   Sutil takes Kobayashi for 10th at Turn 1
14:05:00   Webber, Hamilton, Vettel, Button, Schumacher, Rosberg, Kubica, Massa, Petrov, Kobayashi
14:04:50   LAP 2
14:04:47   He takes fourth around the outside of Turn 12, great stuff!
14:04:39   Button is side-by-side with Schumacher
14:04:27   Alonso has lost a place, nevermind taking any; he's down to 13th!
14:04:14   Button faints down the inside of Schumacher into Turn 8 but is forced to back off
14:04:03   There's some contact at the back
14:03:58   It's Webber, Hamilton, Vettel, Schumacher, Button
14:03:49   Hamilton repasses Vettel at Turns 3 and 4 now
14:03:39   Schumacher is up to 4th, past Button
14:03:31   Vettel passes Hamilton for 2nd!
14:03:13   ...GO!
14:03:11   The 2010 Turkish Grand Prix is...
14:03:05   Can Mark Webber become the first driver since Jenson Button last year to win three races in a row?
14:02:48   The cars have made it back to the grid
14:02:42   Fernando Alonso, for the second race in a row, is forced to fight through traffic after blowing his last two qualifying laps in Q2
14:02:21   Sebastian Vettel celebrates his 50th Grand Prix today and Ferrari of course is starting F1 race number 800
14:01:31   Hamilton could be a threat to Red Bull today, especially as we've seen the latter suffer some technical problems
14:01:15   Webber leads round Hamilton, Vettel and Button on this formation lap
14:00:36   We have air temperatures of a very enjoyable 28°C here, the track is at 48°C
14:00:17   Di Grassi's Virgin is starting from the pit lane due to an oil leak
14:00:07   FORMATION LAP BEGINS
14:00:04   Both Red Bull cars have had roll bar changes since qualifying
13:57:59   Good afternoon from Istanbul Park and welcome to the 2010 Turkish Grand Prix

Turn 12: The day the bull stumbled
31 May 2010

Although McLaren celebrated a fantastic 1-2 finish on Sunday, the 2010 Turkish Grand Prix will be forever remembered amongst Formula 1 fans for one moment and one moment only - the highest profile collision between team-mates since David Coulthard and Mika Häkkinen came together in the 1999 Austrian Grand Prix.

EVERYTHING TO LOSE

Red Bull was on cloud nine after the Monaco Grand Prix

Having clinched a seventh 2010 pole position from as many race weekends 24 hours earlier, Red Bull confirmed that its car was the fastest in terms of raw pace at the anti-clockwise Istanbul Park track.

On top of that, the squad from Milton Keynes had also enjoyed two convincing victories at the previous two races in Barcelona and Monte-Carlo, courtesy of Mark Webber, to see jump into the lead of both World Championships and leave rivals wondering what on earth could be done to prevent a compelling defeat this year.

ILL OMENS

On setup-adjusting Friday, McLaren led the way in both 90-minute practice periods although the majority of onlookers were left to believe that Red Bull were sandbagging, masking their true pace in the form of heavier fuel loads.

However, chinks in the team's armour were just the start of what proved to be a disastrous end, on the face of things; Vettel suffered hydraulic worries in Practice 2, coupled by a blown engine for Webber. There were more hydraulic woes in Saturday morning's Practice 3, this time for the Australian, although the German still did as expected to register the fastest lap of the weekend so far and top the timesheets.

In qualifying, Webber stormed to his third consecutive pole position although a warning shot was fired by McLaren as Hamilton slotted into second, pushing Vettel to third as the younger Red Bull man suffered with a faulty roll bar - a constituent which was changed on both Red Bull cars prior to the race start.

ALL TO PLAN

Although Vettel remained behind Hamilton at the end of Lap 1, despite having momentarily stolen second place at the start, all looked good for the charging Red Bulls as the German retook the place after the leading McLaren suffered from a left-rear wheel problem during his sole pit-stop of the day.

McLaren soon closed in again, though, as Hamilton - joined by team-mate Jenson Button - pushed relentlessly to ensure they ran in the same camera shots as the leaders. However, the Red Bulls' immense speed at the infamous Turn 8 was likely to ensure a guaranteed victory, providing Hamilton could be restrained at the only genuine passing location of the race - Turn 12.

THE MOMENT

Webber led, Vettel was second. The German enjoyed a better run out of Turn 10, through 11 and towards 12 before challenging his team-mate on the inside. With Vettel inching ahead, the German's Renault-powered RB6 came fractionally across the sister car under braking, with its right-rear wheel touching Webber's left-front.

THE RESULT

Webber is pushed wide as Vettel ends his race in the run-off area via a triple spin, narrowly missing Webber again as his car comes to rest. As the McLarens inherit the lead, Webber pits for checks but is able to rejoin third, 7 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher's Mercedes.

THE AFFECTS

Bearing in mind Red Bull's recent form, the incident may be viewed simply as a (substantially large) blot on its copybook come the end of the year.

However, considering that a) Webber in particular was having to save fuel at the time b) McLaren was a major threat all race long in Turkey and c) with Ferrari set to introduce a significant update in Valencia, the moment could prove to be absolutely crucial by the end of the season, with Red Bull having taken home only 15 points as opposed to the maximum 43 which looked so likely.

Turn 12: The day the bull stumbled    Cont.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE OPINIONS

Mark Webber (3rd, 15 points):

"Seb had a big top speed advantage and went down the inside, side-by-side, and he turned right pretty quick and there was contact. It happened pretty fast…a shame for the team and not an ideal day.

There was a long way to go in the race, it wasn't a guaranteed victory but it was an interesting few metres on the track and wasn't the result we wanted."

Sebastian Vettel (DNF, 0 points):

"Well I mean I'm not very happy now, obviously, after something like this happening but, yeah, I mean we were all under pretty much the same conditions - same speed, same pace. I felt I was able to go quicker and came close on the last two or three laps before the incident. I dived down the inside and all of a sudden I lost the car - on the TV you can see we touched.

I'm not the kind of guy who gives one…one that pushes the fault to one guy; we are a team at the end of the day and we have to respect that fact. Unfortunately my race is over - it was important points for the team, for myself...it's not the best case."

Christian Horner, Team Principal:

"It's disappointing for the team to have got into that position today. The one thing I always ask the drivers is that, yes, they can race each other, but give each other room, and that's exactly what didn't happen. They were too far over on the left, Sebastian got a run on the inside of Mark, but then came across too early. They didn't give each other room; it's as simple as that."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

INTER-TEAM TENSION?

Helmut Marko, Red Bull team advisor

With Vettel having raised his hand at Webber as he span violently to a standstill and then having performed a very public 'crazy' hand gesture moments after climbing from his stationary car, the furious German could be seen angrily shunning reporters in the minutes which followed the incident.

As the evening closed in on the paddock, later interviews with Christian Horner - as well as those with team advisor Helmut Marko - strongly suggested that Webber was at fault for what, for many including GPUpdate.net readers via a straw poll, has been regarded as an incident chiefly caused by Vettel.

Although it may be nothing but pure speculation, hearsay also hints that team opinions may sway towards 2011 driver contracts, although speculation has always been rife in Formula 1.

THE UPSHOT

McLaren moves from third to the lead of the Constructors' Championship

Webber still leads the Drivers' Championship although his closest rival is now McLaren driver Button and not his team-mate.

Red Bull, instead of leading the Constructors' battle by 45 points from McLaren (as it would have, had the four finished in the positions they were in at the start of Lap 41), now trails the Woking team by a solitary digit.

Vettel is the biggest loser, confirming how the new-for-2010 scoring system awards winners - he plummets from joint leader status to fifth, the exact equivalent of a race win off Webber's tally.

Montreal weather update: Chance of thunderstorms
08 June 2010

Scattered thunderstorms could affect Formula 1's return to Montreal this weekend, according to current local weather forecasts. Although practice and qualifying are expected to remain dry, despite being perhaps overcast, rain could hit the venue over Saturday night and into Sunday.
Canada took a year off last season although the popular venue, frequently a sell-out, now returns to the calendar after handing the sport first-time winners in Lewis Hamilton and Robert Kubica in 2007 and 2008.

In terms of temperatures, figures in the low to mid-20s will mean t-shirts and shorts will provide comfortable viewing for spectators - not least on Friday, when sunshine is expected for the majority of the day - although a slim chance of thunderstorms on Saturday night is predicted to translate to a genuine chance on race day.

2010 marks a decade since the last wet Canadian Grand Prix, in which Michael Schumacher led home Ferrari team-mate Rubens Barrichello after the latter was instructed to hold position as the German suffered from technical problems.
