McMurray holds off Junior to win the Daytona 500
Race had two pothole delays, two G-W-C attempts

By The Associated Press

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Jamie McMurray held off Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win the Daytona 500 on Sunday, a finish so thrilling it just about made up for a pothole that nearly derailed the Super Bowl of NASCAR.

NASCAR needed two stoppages of well over two hours total to patch a pesky pothole between Turns 1 and 2 of Daytona International Speedway. The setback brought the biggest race of the season to a frustrating halt and had NASCAR executives fretting over the potential fallout.

But when the second patch had been filled, the action picked up tremendously as drivers had to race as if the hole could rip open again at any moment, ending the race on any lap. Did they ever.

They beat and banged their way through the field in a white-knuckle final 32 laps. Then a flurry of late-race accidents put NASCAR's "green-white-checker" policy -- an overtime of sorts -- to the test.

McMurray, using a boost from former teammate Greg Biffle, powered into the lead on the second and final green-white-checkered attempt. But Earnhardt, who restarted the final sprint in 10th place, was slicing his way through the field.

He weaved in and out of traffic, shoving his Chevrolet into three-wide lines, eventually darting his way to McMurray's bumper.

But with just two laps to make up so much ground, Earnhardt ran out of time and McMurray sailed to his first career Daytona 500 victory.

"When I saw the 88 behind me, I thought, 'Oh no.' He had a good car and I just thought -- Earnhardt and Daytona, they win all the time it just seems like," McMurray said. "You never know what to expect."

McMurray climbed from his car and ran to the Daytona 500 logo in the infield, dropping to his knees and pounding on the painted grass. Overcome with emotion, he sobbed in Victory Lane as he celebrated with his Earnhardt Ganassi Racing team.

It was McMurray's first race back with Chip Ganassi and Felix Sabates, who gave him his Cup Series shot in 2002. But McMurray left and spent four frustrating seasons with Roush Fenway Racing, only to lose that ride at the end of last season when NASCAR forced Roush to drop a team to meet its four-car limit.

McMurray had to fight hard to convince Ganassi to take him back, but it paid of Sunday with the biggest win of his career.

"It's unreal," McMurray sobbed

Track History
The speedway sits on a 568-acre site that once hosted the first steel mill located west of the Rocky Mountains, Kaiser Steel Mill. The mill produced the steel that helped build the Liberty ships used by the Allies to win World War II. Penske Motorsports Inc. purchased the land and completed the track in 1997.

Auto Club Speedway of Southern California has a history that you might expect a track just 50 miles from Hollywood to have.

The speedway, formerly known as California Speedway, sits on a 568-acre site that once hosted the first steel mill located west of the Rocky Mountains, Kaiser Steel Mill. The mill produced the steel that helped build the Liberty ships used by the Allies to win World War II.

Kaiser Steel went out of business in 1983. Following that, the site fell into such disrepair that it was used in the movie The Terminator to portray a post-Apocalyptic world where men and machines battled each other for supremacy and survival.

Penske Motorsports Inc. purchased the land and completed the track in 1997. The first race held on the track was a Winston West Series race won by Ken Schrader on June 21, 1997. Later that day, Mark Martin won an International Race of Champions event at the new facility. Jeff Gordon won the track's first Cup race the following day.

Auto Club Speedway has also hosted races in the Nationwide and Truck series, as well as events in the IndyCar Series and what is now the Champ Car World Series on its oval and road racing and motorcycle events on its road courses.

In 1999, Penske Motorsports Inc. merged with International Speedway Corporation, bringing California Speedway into the ISC family of tracks. Beginning in 2004, California Speedway's 2-mile oval became the host of two Cup Series races each year, adding a Labor Day weekend event to its roster of activities.

The track was renamed in February 2008.

Fuel Mileage Is Important

Since it opened in 1997 Auto Club Speedway in California has hosted all three of NASCAR's top touring series.

Due to the wide racing surface most races in California have very few cautions. As a result many Sprint Cup races have come down to fuel mileage battles where one or two drivers manage the race on one less pit stop to cruise to an easy win.

You need a fast car, fast pit stops, a smart crew chief and an efficient engine builder to win at Auto Club Speedway in California.

Daytona champ McMurray earns pole in California

FONTANA, Calif. -- The wave of success Jamie McMurray rode from coast to coast hasn't broken yet.

Fresh from his dramatic victory in last Sunday's Daytona 500, McMurray put his No. 1 Chevrolet on the pole during Friday's qualifying session at Auto Club Speedway.

With a lap at 183.744 mph (39.185 seconds), McMurray edged Earnhardt Ganassi Racing teammate Juan Pablo Montoya (183.477 mph) for the top starting spot in Sunday's Auto Club 500, the second points race of the Sprint Cup season.

Clint Bowyer qualified third at 183.127 mph, as cars powered by Earnhardt-Childress Racing engines grabbed the top three positions on the grid. Kasey Kahne (182.913 mph) was fourth in the No. 9 Ford, followed by Dave Blaney (182.908 mph).

Kevin Harvick (182.899 mph), Bowyer's teammate at Richard Childress Racing, qualified sixth. Four-time defending Series champion Jimmie Johnson, eager to rebound from a 35th-place finish at Daytona, qualified seventh. Sam Hornish, Kyle Busch and Mark Martin claimed starting positions 8-10.

Despite a whirlwind post-Daytona 500 schedule that included appearances in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles, McMurray arrived at Fontana with an optimism that was reinforced by the performance of his car.

"I ran my first two laps of practice, and the car has really good speed in it," McMurray said, who now has four career poles, the last coming on the road course at Sonoma in 2007. "The car feels really solid, so that was refreshing to go through everything this week and get here and have a fast car again.

"I think this weekend is what really sets the standard for the rest of these races. It should be a really good weekend."

McMurray and crew chief Kevin "Bono" Manion piggybacked on the setup for the 2-mile track developed by Montoya and No. 42 Chevy crew chief Brian Pattie.

"The good thing is that, everywhere we've been, I've really liked the 42 car setup, what Juan and Brian have developed," said McMurray who drove a Ford for Roush Fenway Racing last year. "So we just unloaded here very similar to what they had -- and a couple of small things different -- and we just adjusted our car from there.

"Honestly, when I went out, I hoped to get in the top seven. I felt like, if we ran a good lap, we would be in the top seven, so being on the pole was really unexpected."

Jimmie Johnson held off a charge from Kevin Harvick to win the Auto Club 500, his fifth victory at Fontana and the 48th of his Cup Series career.

Johnson uses pit break to win again at Fontana
By The Associated Press
February 21, 2010

FONTANA, Calif. -- Jimmie Johnson got a huge break on his last stop, getting on pit road only seconds before the caution flag came out, and held off a charging Kevin Harvick in the closing laps to win at California on Sunday.

After winning his unprecedented fourth consecutive Sprint Cup championship last season, Johnson started this season by finishing 35th at the Daytona 500.

Consider the drive for five under way.

With Harvick trying to get around him with three laps to go, Johnson moved to block. Harvick scrapped the outside wall and lost his momentum, allowing Johnson to pick up his 48th career victory, and fifth at his home track.

"There's no way of getting around how lucky they are," Harvick said.

Johnson pulled onto pit road for his final stop with 26 laps left, while behind him Brad Keselowski spun out in Turn 4. When everybody else finally got to pit under caution, that made Johnson the leader and he stayed there the rest of the way.

"Fortune came our way," Johnson said. "I'm not going to lie. The fact that we were on pit row gave us track position and I drove my butt off. "

Jeff Burton, who finished third, was on Johnson's bumper on the restart but never could get around him. He was eventually passed by his Richard Childress Racing teammate Harvick.

Harvick cut the margin by more than six-tenths of a second in a matter of laps -- from .983 to .311. He was making his move at the end of lap 247 of 250 when he brushed against the wall.

Johnson had won the past three fall races at California, but Roush Fenway drivers had won the last five February races on the slick two-mile superspeedway before Sunday.

Johnson led eight times for 101 laps and won with an average speed of 141.911 mph. It was his fifth victory in the last 11 Sprint Cup races.

Despite not winning, it was another strong showing for the Richard Childress Racing trio, with Clint Bowyer's eight-place finish backing Harvick and Burton.

RCR didn't win any races -- or even have a top-five finish -- last season with four full-time cars. All three drivers finished in the top 11 at the Daytona 500 last week before another strong showing in Southern California.

Mark Martin, Johnson's Hendrick teammate, finished fourth, followed by Joey Logano and Kurt Busch. Matt Kenseth started 20th and finished seventh with new crew chief Todd Parrott on his pit box, the best result for Roush Fenway.

Juan Pablo Montoya started in the front row beside polesitter and Earnhardt Ganassi teammate Jamie McMurray. Montoya had the lead by the end of the first lap and stayed there until Johnson went under him on the 30th lap.

Montoya was running 15th on lap 140 when the engine on his No. 42 Chevrolet blew up along the frontstretch.

Daytona 500 winner McMurray finished 17th.

Shelby Autos Returns to Sponsor Las Vegas Race

 RacingOne Report

Posted Saturday, November 7, 2009

Shelby Automobiles, a wholly owned subsidiary of Carroll Shelby International Inc. will return in 2010 as the sponsor of the NASCAR Sprint Cup event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Shelby teamed up with LVMS this past March for the Shelby 427. Next year’s event on Feb. 28 will be called the Shelby American to honor the 45th anniversary of the Shelby G.T. 350 and 427 Cobra introductions in 1965.

“We are ecstatic to have the legendary Shelby name on our NASCAR Sprint Cup race for a second consecutive year,” said LVMS President Chris Powell said. “This year’s event was a tremendous success, and we’re looking forward to giving more exposure to the Shelby brand that has, over the years, become synonymous with the best in high-performance cars.”

March’s race was known as the Shelby 427 and featured a 427-mile, 285-lap race. The event will return to its traditional 400-mile, 267-lap distance in 2010.

“Next year will mark an important milestone for two of the most legendary vehicles Shelby ever produced,” said Shelby Autos President Amy Boylan. “The Shelby American NASCAR Sprint Cup event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is the perfect way to celebrate this historic occasion.”

Track History
Just a few miles north of The Strip, Las Vegas Motor Speedway sits like a diamond in the desert. One of the most complete racing complexes in the world, its 1,600 acres includes road courses, a three-eighths mile oval, a dirt track and a state-of-the-art drag racing facility. At its heart, however, is the 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway, home of a 400-mile race in the Cup Series, as well as Nationwide and Truck series events.

2010 Las Vegas: NASCAR Sprint Cup Qualifying Results - Busch, Dodge On Pole!

Kurt Busch and his No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge won the Coors Light Pole Award for the Shelby American with a lap of 28.614 seconds, 188.725 mph. Busch set a new track record breaking the mark of 185.995 mph set by his brother, Kyle, in 2009. Eighteen drivers qualified under the previous record.

This is also Busch's 11th pole in 331 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races. His last pole came in September 2007 at Auto Club Speedway. In addition, this is Busch's first pole and second top-10 start in 2010 and his first pole in ten races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

4-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jeff Gordon and his No. 24 DuPont / Pepsi Max Chevrolet turned the second quickest lap to post his first top-10 start of 2010 and his fifth in 13 races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Gordon just missed the Pole by a mere .011 seconds.

Ryan Newman and his No. 39 Tornados Chevrolet posted his sixth top-10 start at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It is his first top-10 start in three races this season.

Fourth overall, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his No. 88 National Guard / AMP Energy Chevrolet also turned a scorching lap just .08 behind the Pole winning lap.

Kyle Busch and his M&M's Toyota rounded out the top five.

Greg Biffle and his No. 16 3M Ford gave the manufacturer their best qualifying result, seventh.

Kevin Conway (39th) was the fastest qualifying rookie.

In all, 45 NASCAR Sprint Cup entries attempted to qualify for Sunday's Shelby American at Las Vegas.

Vegas native Busch wins pole at LVMS in record time
Gordon on outside front row; Newman to start third
By Sporting News Wire Service

LAS VEGAS -- Las Vegas native Kurt Busch says it's his turn to win at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Busch took the first step in that direction Friday, winning the pole for Sunday's Shelby American Cup Series race with a track-record speed of 188.719 mph.

Busch hopes to follow his brother and defending race winner Kyle Busch to Victory Lane. Turning a lap in 28.614 seconds, Busch edged Jeff Gordon (188.646 mph) for the top starting spot in the third race of the season.

Ryan Newman (188.180 mph) qualified third during a session in which 18 drivers broke Kyle Busch's qualifying mark of 185.995 mph (29.033 seconds), set last year. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (188.173 mph) will start fourth and Kyle Busch (188.153 mph) fifth.

Kurt Busch took to the track with the same crew chief -- Steve Addington -- who guided Kyle to victory at Las Vegas last year. Relieved of his duties at Joe Gibbs Racing late last season, Addington accepted an offer with Kurt's No. 2 Penske Racing Dodge team during the offseason.

"I've got the right guy in my camp," said Busch, who won his first pole since 2007, his first in NASCAR's new race car and the 11th of his career. "It seems like Steve Addington definitely has his game on here at this track. I just hope that bleeds over to Sunday.

"I would say we used a combination of what I was familiar with and what he [Addington] liked. Right now, that's our plan of attack each week. We had success last year with our [car]. It feels good to have Addington's notes and knowledge to blend into that. ... It feels really neat here in our hometown, Las Vegas."

Gordon said the new tire combination Goodyear brought to the track was primarily responsible for the dramatic increase in qualifying speed compared to last year.

Notes:

• Series points leader Kevin Harvick scraped the wall during Friday morning's practice session and qualified 34th after repairs to the right side of his Chevrolet were completed.
• In nine previous races at Las Vegas, Kurt Busch has qualified 10th or better for each event.
• Casey Mears and Terry Cook failed to qualify for the 43-car field.
• Joe Nemechek was the fastest of the drivers required to qualify for the race on speed in 15th.• There have been nine different pole winners in 13 races at Las Vegas
• Qualifying at Las Vegas has never been canceled
• Four drivers have competed in all 12 Las Vegas races: Jeff Burton, Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin, and Bobby Labonte
• Five of the previous 12 races at Las Vegas were won from a top-10 starting position
• Two of the previous 12 Las Vegas races were won from the front row and one from the pole (Kyle Busch 2009, but went to the rear for an engine change)
• The lowest starting position of a Las Vegas race winner is 25th (Matt Kenseth in 2/06)
