AUTOSPORT's exclusive spy shot of the new car during a filming day shows it to be a radical departure from the team's 2009 challenger - featuring the Red Bull Racing-type high raised nose that could well become common throughout the grid

Williams' new driver Nico Hulkenberg gave the machine, in blue and white colours that have not yet been fully liveried, its first try out. The car was only fired up for the first time in the early hours of the morning.

Sam Michael, the Williams technical director, told AUTOSPORT recently that the car would be a big departure from the FW31.

"The FW32 is a clean-sheet design from front to back," he said. "It's pretty much brand new from an aerodynamic point of view."

"The fact that we had a consistent car across all of the tracks in 2009, and wiped out a lot of the vices that we had in the previous car, gives us confidence."

Williams is scheduled to join the majority of current teams at Valencia next week for the first official pre-season test, which begins on Monday.

Williams Formula 1 team targets China debut for own F-duct
Source - GMM
Saturday, 27 March 2010
Hot on the heels of McLaren and Sauber, Williams could be the next Formula One team to implement an F-duct system, designed to spoil the downforce to the rear wing and boost straight line speed.

Germany's Auto Motor und Sport quoted technical director Sam Michael as confirming that the British team aims to be ready to debut its version in China mid next month.

It is believed Force India is also close to implementing a system, amid rumours that Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes are also hard on work in the design phase.

Renault's team boss Eric Boullier said in Melbourne on Friday that the Enstone based team is not focused on the innovation.

Auto Motor und Sport said that due to the chassis homologation rules, teams copying McLaren's system will no doubt all need to use holes designed originally for wiring for the air flow.

However, it is understood that Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes are having trouble with holes that are not big enough.

It is rumoured that Ferrari has expressed concern that, while Virgin redesigns its homologated chassis to accommodate a bigger fuel tank, the team will also allow for a fully implemented F-duct system.

Williams to introduce aero updates in Malaysia
01 April 2010

The Williams F1 team is hoping to improve its position in the constructors' championship this weekend at the Malaysian Grand Prix. Williams F1's technical director Sam Michael furthermore revealed the team will introduce a number of aerodynamic improvements and some upgrades to help gearshifting.

"The team heads to Malaysia with the target of getting both drivers into Q3 and improving our position in the constructors' championship," Sam Michael said. "Sepang is quite a different circuit to the two previous tracks we've visited in that it has a lot of high speed changes of direction.

"We will have some improvements on the FW32 for this race, mostly relating to the aerodynamics and we will also have some upgrades to help gearshifting. Both drivers will be working hard on our starts over the course of the weekend to get back to our usual standard."

Williams using altered diffuser at Sepang
02 April 2010

The Williams team endured a tough first day of running in Malaysia as Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hülkenberg finished in only 16th and 17th positions in second free practice on Friday. With the Brazilian having scored points in the opening two Grands Prix of 2010, the quest is likely to be somewhat harder this weekend.

With the best Williams lap being some 2.7 seconds down on Lewis Hamilton's leading time, the Grove-based team was faced with a series of challenges in humid Malaysia at the start of the second race weekend in the space of a week.

Barrichello arrives in the Sepang paddock

"We spent today's practice sessions working on starts and evaluating a revised diffuser and front brake duct," explained Technical Director Sam Michael. "The tyres appear to be quite stable again, something we've come to expect from Bridgestone. Tonight we'll be focussing on extracting more speed out of the FW32 for qualifying. We had a mechanical problem on Nico's car in the afternoon session but the mechanics were able to fix it quickly."

"That was a tough day for us," said Barrichello. "We carried out lots of interrogation on the car but we feel that we aren't as quick as we should be, so we have a lot of work to do tonight to find out why that is."

His younger team-mate echoed the sentiments. "It was a pretty difficult day, certainly not ideal," commented GP2 Champion Hülkenberg. "We had some technical issues on my car but I'm not quite sure what they are yet. We need to get our heads together to find some time for qualifying."

Williams won't run F-duct system in qualifying
17 April 2010

The Williams Formula 1 team ran with a new engine cover on Saturday morning. Rubens Barrichello tested a copy of the F-Duct system but according to the team he did not have enough time on track to be confident with it for qualifying.

The F-Duct system was first introduced by the McLaren Formula 1 team. Since then many teams are trying to copy the system. The system should be able to bring the car a better straightline speed on track.

At Williams Rubens Barrichello first tested the system in Saturday's one-hour practice session but the Brazilian is not convinced it will bring the team something extra.

Barrichello optimistic over new components
08 June 2010

Rubens Barrichello heads to Montreal upbeat as Williams prepares to debut several new parts on its Cosworth-powered machines. The Grove squad fell back in Turkey due to accidents in Monaco although the Brazilian's optimism has been raised, not least because of his own track record in Canada.
This time last year, Barrichello lay second in the championship standings to team-mate Jenson Button; fast forward 12 months and the Paulista is placed 12th overall after switching from Brawn to Williams although he remains cheerful as Round 8 approaches.

Barrichello's Honda led briefly on its way to 7th place in 2008

"Everyone loves the fact that we are going back to Canada, including me!" he smiled. "I've raced there 16 times so I have a lot of experience, which should be an advantage because it's not the easiest of circuits to get right.

"It's a road track, there's not a lot of grip and it's very narrow, so completely different to Istanbul and requires a very different aero package.

"We have some new parts coming for this race and I know the team is pushing really hard to improve our performance. Because I've had some podium finishes there and because I love the circuit, I'm going full of optimism and hope to have a good result."

A Montreal win eludes Rubens - who turned 38 last month - although he has come home second on three occasions and picked up a total of five rostrum finishes.

Williams plans significant Silverstone upgrade
15 June 2010

Williams will be debuting its next major car update for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, which will be held on the second weekend of July. Sam Michael has also confirmed that the Grove squad's f-duct device will be tested once again on the streets of Valencia next time out.
It was a poor Canadian Grand Prix by Williams' standards, with both Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hülkenberg having run into trouble with fellow competitors; the latter was also handed a drive-through penalty for pit lane speeding as the duo made their ways to finishing positions of 13th and 14th.

However, Technical Director Michael hopes to see an improvement from Silverstone onwards as the car runs recently-developed and tested components for the first time.

"We ran a couple of programmes in the wind tunnel to get the most efficient iteration of the rear wing," he said, with a new rear wing which first made an appearance in Montreal set to stay on the cars for Valencia.

"To be honest, the rear wing is the main difference for low-drag tracks now, with the top bodywork being so clean due to the rules.

"Our next major upgrade is planned for release at the British Grand Prix after Europe. For Valencia, we will be taking the blown rear wing (f-duct) with us to test again."

Williams to experiment with f-duct in Valencia
22 June 2010

Williams has revealed that it will introduce the latest version of its f-duct system as Formula 1 hits the streets of Valencia's port complex for the third time this weekend. The Grove squad debuted the rear wing-stalling device for the Chinese Grand Prix but since Spain has elected to run without it.
With the f-duct allowing drivers to manually control airflow levels to the car's rear wing, thus being able to manage downforce levels on straights and therefore enjoy greater top speeds, Williams removed the part for the tight confines of Monte-Carlo and is yet to reintroduce it.

"Speeds tend to average out around the lap at around 200kph (125mph)," Williams Technical Director Sam Michael explained of this weekend's Spanish track. "As a street circuit, the teams do face certain challenges over the weekend.

"The track provides little grip at the outset, the multitude of corners place some considerable stress on the tyres and the coastal location can whip up some sea breezes which can affect the balance of the car. As overtaking opportunities are also limited around Valencia, a good grid position is important.

"We've secured points at each of the two races in Valencia and that is our aim again this time round. We will have further upgrades on the FW32, including the development blown rear wing."

Williams FW32 - revised front wing

Williams have introduced two new front wings in Montreal. Both feature two vertical turning vanes and are designed to boost the airflow from underneath the raised front section of the chassis (1). Each front wing has a different forward upper wing (2). On one example there was a small splitter (3) on the outside of the endplate. The team has also brought two different rear wings.

Williams to run blown diffuser on Friday
07 July 2010

Williams have confirmed that they will be trialling the Red Bull-pioneered blown diffuser at Silverstone for the first two practice sessions of the race weekend on Friday. However, it remains to be seen as to whether Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hülkenberg will use the feature during Sunday’s race.
A blown diffuser involves the exits of the car’s exhaust pipes being lowered in order to make best use of hot gases by channelling them around the rear suspension in order to gain better downforce levels. However, apart from Red Bull – whose car was designed to incorporate such a novelty – others have suffered problems, such as the suspension parts being over-heated on the Mercedes GP cars last time out in Valencia.

Sam Michael, Williams F1 Technical Director

“Although Silverstone has undergone some significant layout changes since last year, the traditional, high-speed first sector hasn’t been touched and remains the circuit’s biggest challenge for the drivers and chassis,” Williams Technical Director Sam Michael explained.

“The FW32 will have further upgrades for the British Grand Prix, including an exhaust blown diffuser, rear brake duct and front suspension changes. We'll evaluate the exhaust during the practice sessions on Friday and will make a final decision as to whether we race it that night.”
